    ------------------------

I arrived to Melbourne's Corner Hotel during the final song of Oh Mercy's set. But from what I heard, I can tell that these guys are going to have a good future ahead. Talking about bands with a bright future, Dash & Will, the second support of the evening, are on the verge of success. Dash & Will consist of two young attractive girls from Melbourne. Last time I saw the two girls perform, it was a very intimate gig with acoustic guitars. Although things have changed in 6 months, they now have a backing band to give their songs a pop sound. The crowd seem to enjoy Dash & Will, even if a few of them were calling out silly remarks such as "make out (with each other)". Dash & Will's performance reminds me of a mix between Tegan and Sara and Australian pop-band The Veronicas.

Dash & Will set consisted of their debut single 'Pick It Up' (they could have picked a debut single), 'Too Young', and an Easybeats cover of 'Somethin' Wrong'. Dash & Will have a good pop-sound which will feature in the Australian Top 20 charts within the next year.

At 10:30 headliners of the night and Sunderland's finest rock band, The Futureheads. The Englishmen begun the night of fast-paced post-punk/indie rock tunes with 'Walking Backwards'. It did not take the crowd long at all to start dancing along. It wasn't long when the guitar strap of frontman, Barry Hyde, fell off his guitar. Amazingly, (and a funny site to see) the roadie fixed it with tape while Barry was still playing his guitar.

The band praised the Melbourne crowd for their excitement during the gig, and they recieved a loud cheer when the crowd were told they were better than the crowd in (Melbourne's rival city) Sydney. The chemistry in the band was great to watch, they were not shy to speak to the crowd at all. Guitarist, Ross Millard advised the crowd the upcoming song started with his favourite chord, when his fellow band-member replied "You only need to know three chords in this band though".

The Futureheads covered songs from their three-album back catalogue including; Radio Heart, recent hit single 'Beginning Of The Twist' and Kate Bush covered tune 'Hounds Of Love', which echo'd across The Corner Hotel and became the highlight of the gig.

After an hour of playing, The Futureheads left the stage. But the crowd wanted more, some fans even pulled down the microphone from the stage and started yelling into it "FUTUREHEADS! FUTUREHEADS!". The band then returned on stage, to play three more songs (the band stated they don't usually do encores) and satisfy the crowd one last time.

Thu 25 Sep – The Futureheads, Timid Tiger
    beloved songs

    On the show...

Maupa stop by the BBC open centre to talk about their latest activities. The band - who take their name from the Polish word for 'monkey' - also discuss their involvement on Jamie Holman's course at Blackburn Media College. Jamie, head of the college's media department, is also in the studio tonight to give us info about the college record label On Song records and the opportunities they provide to aspiring musicians.

Terry from 10 X Better music is another man with experience and huge insight into the music industry. He joins the discussion and puts forward his thoughts, especially with regard to band promotion and plugging. All in all, there's a lot of good advice for fledgling musical talents to listen to tonight.

We play a package of Leeds and Reading live tracks from the BBC Introducing stage including The Maybes?, The Joy Formidable, We Are Scientists, Attack! Attack!, Biffy Clyro and Tripwires.

    What's Top of the Pops?

Lady GaGa feat. Akon & Colby O'Donis - PlayJust Dance

Katy Perry still reigns supreme at number one on the UK chart, so it’s over to Canada this week where Perry capitulated after nine weeks at the top of the Hot 100 to Lady GaGa. Lady GaGa’s real name is Stefani Gabriella Germanotta and she’s decided to put on some lightning-bolt eye makeup and make her own career after serving time as a songwriter for the likes of Pussycat Dolls and Britney Spears. Her mantra? Just Dance. Does it matter that you can’t remember how your shirt got inside out, that you can’t remember the name of the club you’re in and that you can’t control your “playboy mouth”? Not if you’re body-popping along to the mechanoid beat it doesn’t.

Even though she claims she “can’t see straight anymore”, things are alright now that Lady GaGa is bustin’ her moves to this electronica bilge. The video features the Lady laying into the grooves at a lo-fi robo-disco houseparty with a bunch of other bedraggled ravers and wasters. Amongst the guests is producer Akon and upcoming R&B smoothie Colby O’Donis, though the most interesting of these strung-out synth freaks has got to be the dude crashed out on the toilet wearing a fluffy wolf head. This looks like a real drag of a party; it needs a giant mascot to shake things up.

There also appears to be someone who’s got a toy drum on their shoulders where their face should be. Should we be concerned? Hey, relax... “just dance”. Lady GaGa clearly isn’t interested in her guests and gets on with roughing up an inflatable whale in the backyard paddling pool. Interestingly enough, GaGa recently performed this track at this year’s Miss Universe finals in Vietnam. Who the hell decided that having the plastic humpback-humping Lady blast out her “half-psychotic synth-hypnotic” sounds would be the ideal half-time entertainment at a South East Asian beauty pageant?

We knew that Canadians liked fetishistic action and giant-headed fluffy things, but who knew that the way to score a hit on their charts was to blend ‘em all together in a bad video for a tech-heavy dance track? Ah well, I guess they can only take so much Rush and Bryan Adams. In the absence of a new number one in the UK, looking across the Atlantic it’s Lady GaGa, Colby O’Donis and her fellow anti-social anthropomorphic freaks who are Top of the Pops...

    The Bryan Awards...

This week, legendary pop icon Neil Diamond picks up the "The Bryan Award for Being Diamond by Name and Diamond by Nature" after offering fans in Columbus, Ohio a full refund and a heartfelt personalised apology when laryngitis interfered with the concert.

A much slower rise from 40,000 to 60,000 than from 20,000 to 40,000 - blame the ipod and the lack of sproggling on it (my fault, I think it is available).

So my top 10 now looks like this:

    10. (down from 7=) Green Day

    9. (new entry) 4hero

    8. (up from 9) The Libertines

    7. (unchanged) The Beatles

    6. (down from 5) Sandy Denny

    5. (down from 3) The Go! Team

    4. (down from 2) Yann Tiersen

    3. (up from 4) Lush

    2. (down from 1) Zero 7

    1. (up from 6) The Futureheads

So no big changes, though the Futureheads have continued their inexorable rise to the top of my playlist on the back of their latest great album. Good to see 4Hero in the list, have been listening to them for years now.

Bubbling under and possibly to make an appearance in the 80,000 tracks top 10:

So., 14. Sep. – The Futureheads, Timid Tiger

Konzerts ("Lukas Podolski never meant anything to me") im Frühjahr im Luxor bestritten hatte.
