(1965 – 1970)

The Monkees were a four-man musical band created to be the stars of an American television series of the same name, which ran on NBC from 1966 to 1968. The members were: Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, David Jones and Peter Tork. The Monkees were formed in 1965 in Los Angeles, California and disbanded in 1970. At their peak they were one of the most popular musical acts of their time.

Several reunions of The Monkees have taken place. The first reunion lasted from 1986 to 1989 while another regrouping took place between 1996 - 1997. The Monkees last worked together in 2001.

Created by producers of a TV series to be an American Beatles, the antics of the Monkees band members on the television series were very reminscent of Beatles’ antics in films like ‘Help’ and ‘Hard Day’s Night’. Indeed, in songs like ‘Forget that Girl…’, the band and even the lead singer could sound just like the Beatles. With songs provided by Don Kirschner from such writers as Neil Diamond and Carole King, among others, the Monkees were assured of pop success. However, in the beginning, the four group members were hired only as actors to front the band and to provide the vocals whilst studio musicians recorded the backing music. These recordings were provided by Kirschner.

The Monkees made some outstanding music. 'Porpoise Song', 'Valleri'and 'Listen To The Band' are just... unbreakable. And this whole 'they werent a real band like the (fill blank)' is pretty funny. They made better music than many bands who 'really' made music at that time. Incidentally, The Byrds first great record - all session musos more or less... there are many more examples.

Take That were more popular than a lot of more talented bands of the early 90ies, so what? And they also had 2,5 good songs (can`t remember them right now). ;)

The Monkees were almost just as popular as the Beatles back in the day. When Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band came out, it moved the Monkees new album down from the #1 spot to the #2 spot where it stayed #2 for 11 weeks. That says a lot because that was arguably the Beatle's best album of all time. Sure, The Monkees weren't as musically talented, but they had many more talents that served them better (ie The Monkees TV series = amazing acting, very funny)

Re: eeew, you like the Monkees? First of all, you would have had to been a puebescent girl in the late 60s or a girl, or a male secure with himself enuf to acknowledge your sensitive side. so if you're a dude born after 1966, what're U doing here? And about the "puppet" aspect; there are more manufactured bands now than anytime in history. The Monkees were just the beginning of total "corporate Rock", Pop or Soul. I don't even list Hip-hop/gansta/rap as a musical genre! It's pure sell-out like the sex pistols who were manufactured and sold to us. Find a need and fill it-that's marketing at work. Who have *you* bought into today?

As a band in the late 60's they were the only ones ridiculed to death. Mickey Dolenz Peter Tork Mike Nesmith and Davey Jones were pushed into a box together and made it work. i have deep respect for them all. The fact that Royce and Hart wrote most of their music is true but it was true for several bands of the era. I wish you could ask John Lennon about them he loved the guys for their ability to fight less than the beatles.

@AzuAtoms: No, they actually did learn to play the instruments well themselves and started to write own songs after their record company allowed them to. Because of this they were some sort of role models for the punk rock movement of the 1970s.

The Monkees didn't write their own songs, or play their own instruments, but it's ok, they weren't about music, they were about social and political upheaval.

Porpoise Song is a gem. It's like an acid trip set to music. I have no idea what the song is about, but I love it anyway.

wetwillies: The Monkees were 'actors' who producers made into a band. The music was done by session musicians! How can you even compare them to The Beatles?! Do you even know what you are talking about! :-P

I was really surprised to hear (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone. I only knew it by hardcore punk band Minor Threat.
