  • Focus on Sanity - Mixtape

    7 Oct 2008, 09:08 by fieldmuzick

Ok, before I start my dayjob I need to setup this mixtape. It takes me around an hour with selecting and writing some notes and prepare this playlist with last.fm tags, but I know you like that ^^.
Well again a nice mixture of different styles (but mostly acoustic guitar freaky folk stuff) hold together by my brilliant taste of music :D

    gotoandplay('Focus On Sanity');

    1. Focus On Sanity - My Teenage Stride
Great band in vein of early Post-Punk, but nicer
    2. Make Out, Fall Out, Make Up (Love Is All Cover) - of Montreal
This is a coverversion by Love is all - the track was presented one journalpost before, this is the acoustic version by Kevin Barnes of my favorite band ever
    3. On a Plain (Nirvana Cover) - Animal Collective
really a great cover by AC.
    4. hes a rebel (The Crystals cover) - The Morning Benders
and the next raw acoustic version of a hit title
    5. Space Oddity (David Bowie Cover) - The Langley Schools Music Project
I always want to post this track, and now in the cover section, it fits. This record is made in 1976 with a school chorus leaded by a mad teacher. He let the kids sing some popular hits, let them play the instruments and recorded this with just one microphone. read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Langley_Schools_Music_Project
    6. Livin Lives - Virgin Insanity
this is again Virgin Insanity, mentioned before in a journal. great simple psych folk in muddy quality.
    7. Flicker - The One AM Radio
very nice peaceful track, I love the tremolo effect on guitar.
    8. Secret Pint - Mogwai
pure beauty - nothing else - you can hear the room and the athmosphere which makes it much beautifuler
    9. La beauté et la bête - Charlemagne Palestine
this is very special piece of music - I listen a long long time to experimental drone stuff, but this track is the only one, that makes me ever smile in this field of music. Beside the wonderful shining organ drone tone and the peaceful athmosphere of some animals on the countryside or maybe in a petting zoo, you will hear something that may not fit, but it do, and no lascivious thoughts will enter your mind... maybe :D - so enjoy!!!
    10. Baby You're the Best - Alan Madej
sweeet music by a bearded guy (like the most acoustic guitar hippies :))
    11. Only Daughter - O'Death
great so called goth country - I was never never into country music, but since some month i really enjoy this stuff. You should listen to Truck Stop too!! ok, that was a joke ^^
    12. Five And Dime - Port O'Brien
from an earlier album - i like that folky hippie shite
    13.1 A Death, A Proclamation - Phosphorescent
great version recorded at a Daytrotter Session - grab more tracks here: http://www.daytrotter.com/article/764/free-songs-phosphorescent - His voice sounds much more sicker than on his releases
    13.2 Enter a uh - John Frusciante
ah speaking about sick voices... I will add this sick track to the mixtape too.
John is the guitarplayer by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. In his heroine times he record some strange lo-fi records with his drug pals River Phoenix and Johnny Depp :) - maybe to buy more heroine from record sales haha - but these times are over for john and river. john is clean and river dead.
well and this track sounds so so sick... and if you watch the video (below) directed by johnny depp you will know why it is not an good idea to try some heroine - but you know this by yourself :D
    14. Mouth Disciples - Psychedelic Horseshit
to clear out I am not a Hippie, but you won't believe that :)
    15. I Heard Your Slip Showing - Burning Star Core
so at last - Burning X Core from earlier release. today he do some great droning noise music with voice and violin, this is more homerecording shit. get it here: http://www.dronedisco.com/bxc/ADPATHTP/

    gotoandplay('Focus On Sanity');

ok, I hope you enjoy, find something new or just skip each track because you like to listen to Heavy Metal.
    all the best m.

  • I am bored.

    18 Aug 2008, 19:01 by singthenightsky

    1. How did you get into 29?
Conor Oberst - I believe I was listening to idobi radio one afternoon, and At the Bottom of Everything started playing. Pretty sure it was idobi, anyway. I absolutely loved it. In the course of the next few months, I couldn't get enough Bright Eyes. Recently, I was on Strike Gently and there was a MAJOR LEAK!! link to Conor's new album. Needless to say, I liked that too.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
Cinematic Sunrise - I don't really know. I was out of town, at a mall with my mother, feeling very, very bored. I walked into Hot Topic and started listening to the various artists on the album sampler thing they have. One of the artists was Cinematic Sunrise, and, well, I went home and downloaded that album. I want to say that the first track I heard was PlayPulling a Piano From a Pond, but I'm not sure.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 33?
The Maine - Hmm. I don't know that I really have a favorite lyric by them. I do, however, quite enjoy Well, I'll state something rash / She had the most amazing... smile. because it makes me laugh.

    4. How did you get into 49?
Switchfoot - I actually don't know where I first heard them, because the first Switchfoot song I remember hearing is PlayLet That Be Enough. I've always loved that song, and their music on the radio isn't bad, but the song that made me really love them was PlayLove Is the Movement.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
The Beatles - Eighteen. Plus various covers.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50?
Quietdrive - Handsome Devil's Benediction. Probably because of the absolutely incredible experience it was to hear it live, with Kevin on the violin and whatnot.

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad?
Spoon - No, not really. I don't listen to them enough to really have emotional ties to their music. The Underdog is really the only reason they're in my top however many.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15?
Margot & the Nuclear So and So's - On a Freezing Chicago Street, by far.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5?
The Matches - Right now, it's What Katie Said. I also really, really like Drive and Darkness Rising, though.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
A B & the Sea - Stegosaurus and zebra in a cage tend to make me pretty cheerful.

    11. What is the worst song by 40?
Dashboard Confessional - I just did not like Dusk and Summer as a whole.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10?
Bright Eyes - I don't know that I have a favorite, but I really like Reinvent The Wheel, Hot Knives, and Road to Joy.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
Miniature Tigers - Do I have a favorite memory involving Miniature Tigers? (Answer: No, not really.)

    14. What is your favorite song by 38?
The Morning Benders - Their cover of PlayLovefool.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
The Rocket Summer - PlayBrat Pack never fails to cheer me up.

    16. Is there a song by 25 that makes you sad?
Mayday Parade - I guess Miserable At Best isn't the most upbeat song.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
    Treaty of Paris - Rollerskates.

    18. What's your favorite lyric by 11?
Pink & Purple Python! - From Electric, the line Anything electric makes you melt.

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1?
Ivory - Well, they're all pretty awesome. But the only one I've ever had the pleasure of really conversing with was Nathaniel. So I'll go with him.

    20. Is there a song by 14 that makes you happy?
Relient K - PlayMood Rings. Definitely.

    21. What is a good memory involving 27?
The Postal Service - Every Postal Service memory is a happy memory. Gosh.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16?
Fall Out Boy - PlayHomesick at Space Camp.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
    The Catch - R-A-D-I-OH!. :D

    24. What is your favorite album by 18?
Plain White T's - Stop. It's disappointing that they don't play songs off that album anymore...

    25. What is your favorite song by 21?
Yellowcard - Maybe PlayRough Draft? Yeah, probably.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
Paramore - I don't remember. The first time I heard them was at one of their shows, and the only song I remember them playing was PlayWhoa, so we'll go with that one.

    27. What is your favorite album by 3?
Silent Point - I love all of their music equally. (Except maybe Jenny Jenny and Fast Cars And Airplanes a little bit more.)

    28. What is you favorite song by 2?
Something Corporate - Am I really supposed to decide on ONE Something Corporate song? All of them. Every single one.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
A Venn Diagram - Oh god. Um... I first heard A Venn Diagram at a battle of the bands. I remember them doing I Was Murdered, because it's such a ridiculous song. I think the first song they did involved cross-dressing and throwing crayons, but I don't remember the name of it.

    30. What is your favorite song by 8?
All Time Low - Right now it's PlayLet It Roll, but I also like PlayPoppin' Champagne and PlayShameless, PlayDear Maria, Count Me In ... and PlayThe Girl's A Straight-Up Hustler. I like All Time Low. What can I say.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live?
Nathaniel Le Marin - I have never seen Nathaniel solo, but if we're counting Ivory, then twice.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
Hit the Lights - I can't listen to How Will I Know without laughing.

    33. How did you get into 12?
MC Lars - Well, I was in Hot Topic one day about... three years ago? And Hot Topic Is Not Punk Rock (ft The Matches) was playing. First I was upset because there was rap playing and I didn't like rap, but then I started listening and talking to my favorite employee (Mark) about it. He said it was MC Lars and MC Lars was amazing.

    34. What is the worst song by 45?
Owl City - I don't know that they have actually bad songs, but I'm indifferent to most, other than The Saltwater Room.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34?
Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta, of course.

    36. What is the first song you ever heard by 48?
Painting Our Hearts - Fate Would Make a Great Lawyer. Ahh, ♥.

    37. How many times have you seen 35 live?
Across The Universe Soundtrack - I don't know that it's possible to see a soundtrack live.

    38. What is your favorite song by 36?
Verona Grove - I greatly enjoy PlayChances. I like both versions, but the one from From the Tablet to the Towers is slightly better, in my opinion.

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
Mae - PlayTisbury Lane, but I didn't pay much attention to it. I got PlaySuspension on a Warped Tour compilation and that's where the love started.

    40. What is your favorite album by 7?
NeverSayNever - Is there more than one album?

    41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy?
Panic at the Disco - PlayTime to Dance, because it's based on one of my favorite books, Invisible Monsters.

    42. What is your favorite album by 41?
Ellison - I haven't heard the new one yet, so I'll have to go with Say Goodnight, Sleep Alone.

    43. What is your favorite song by 24?
Muse - Starlight. That was predictable, I know.

    44. What is a good memory you have involving 46?
Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard - The Dark Knight in general.

    45. What is your favorite song by 42?
Metro Station - PlayShake It, which was also predictable.

    46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
Call It A Draw - You Mean The World To Me and I was missing Desiree make me pretty happy.

    47. What is your favorite album by 4?
Jack's Mannequin - I'm going to have to go with Everything in Transit, only because The Glass Passenger hasn't been released yet.

    48. Who is a favorite member of 37?
Blink-182 - Actually, none of them. Sorry. :/

    49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43?
Fleet Foxes - PlayWhite Winter Hymnal, covered by A B & the Sea.

    50. What is your favorite song by 20?
Brand New - As of this moment, it is PlaySeventy Times 7. It used to be PlayJude Law and a Semester Abroad, though.

Sat 24 May – 2008 Sasquatch! Music Festival

    ozomatli

    New Discoveries:
Ozomatli: fuckin fun music to dance to!!!
The Morning Benders: too good for the wookie stage. they should be famous.
Cancer Rising: probably the most fun I had the whole weekend. awesome live show, you need to go see them. they are also really nice people who posed for a photo with me!
Michael Franti & Spearhead: Chill reggae sprinkled with hiphop and political messages, this band made me happy.
Battles: i gained much appreciation for this band, especially for the song PlayAtlas.
Ghostland Observatory: the people next to our tent were playing them the morning before the show and i really liked it. the show looked really fun from where i was over by the main stage hill (waiting for the lips). super hyper mathy synth pop with a vocalist that sounds like cedric bixler-zavala and/or The Blood Brothers.

    me with cancer rising

    Lived up to expectations:
M.I.A.: i love this woman. i would still rather see her indoors, in a dance hall, in london.
Death Cab for Cutie: the sound was crystal clear and exactly like the cd. they played some of my all time favorite songs (see setlist below)
Built to Spill: they are always good eveytime.
Rodrigo y Gabriela: even better live than on the cd! their music sounds like it is made by way more than two amplified acoustic guitars...i think people who didn't know what to expect were blown away, and so was i.
The Mars Volta: people have been dissin on these guys...and while i think that they have gone downhill since De-Loused in the Comatorium, you have to appreciate the sheer creative energy that these guys radiate. the sound and performance was much better at sasquatch than the time i saw them open for the red hot chili peppers. they didn't play anything from deloused :( but PlayCygnus...Vismund Cygnus was sweet to hear.

Everyone's 15 minutes of fame on stage with effin M.I.A.!

    Fleet Foxes
    The New Pornographers

    Tegan and Sara

  • What's Up 2007? Part 4: The 9 Bands That Will Be Big in 5 Years (best new artist)

    24 Nov 2007, 12:29 by rozebanaan

During the making of my ultimate top 50 – just hold on, it will come soon, don’t get too excited! – I noticed there were quite some youngsters with good albums. Not great albums – then they would’ve been in this ultimate list of mine – but just plain good, with all the youthful mistakes etc. So Why wouldn’t I put them in the spotlights first? So, here is Top 9 of Most Promising Debuts, or something like that... (don’t know whether they’re all debuts :D)

    9. imadethismistake – Tomorrow We start New
    http://www.myspace.com/imadethismistake

Did anyone ever hyperventilate here? Cause if you did, you shouldn’t make the mistake of listening to Imadethismistake. The singer is out of breath all of the time, but still can’t resist of singing this catchy acoustic folk-punk kinda songs, with just a little hint of emo in it. Songs about how you have to choose to go to college or otherwise someone will punch you in the face are always nice. Musically it’s all wonderful acoustic instrumental built-up thingies. I admit: after five songs it tends to start to get on my nerves just a little bit, but hey we all get nervous at times! If they learn to just stop and breath once in a while, they’ll be a pleasant surprise for the years to come.
Favourite Tracks: College Or A Broken Nose, My Sins, Imaginary Notes
Favourite Lyrics: I Think I Made Up A lot of what i said

    (no album cover to find?)
    8. French Quarter – French Quarter
    http://www.myspace.com/frenchquartermusic

I’m not sure whether this album is already out, but in Oink-, Torrent-, Illegal Weblog times I already seem to have found it somewhere. But don’t you moral hypocryts worry, i’ll buy it (before you start to yell at me and call me names: remember that if i wouldn’t have downloaded it, i would never have been able to give you this hint! It’s free advertising baby!) .. Anyway, i’m not gonna rattle on on me still buying cds but not before listening to it by downloading it. French Quarter is a gentle summer breeze, hitting you softly like a butterfly with coloured wings. I know, the metaphore sucks. He is friends with guys from Woods, who have made a really great album, but he doesn’t sound that lo-fi.. Acoustic pearls that perhaps could be compared to Peter & The Wolf (but i suck at comparisons).. Hey, just listen to it!
    Favourite Tracks: Debt, In June

    7.Begushkin – Nightly Things
    http://www.myspace.com/begushkin

Will Oldham is like an old friend. He sneaks into your bedroom at night and whisper songs into your ear. But he has this one kinda sneaky side: he has an ultimate craving for women. He just wants to have sex all the time. And he isn’t always safe. So he has a lot of bastard children. Meet Begushkin, son & nephew of Mr. Oldham. Especially the voice, the timbre is quite similar. His songs aren’t yet Great oldham-standard, but they’re the ideal soundtrack to listen to at full moon, when the trees have no leaves. Sad, but beautiful nightly music.
Favourite Tracks: Nightly Things, At night With Me, Bitter Night Choir
Favourite Lyrics: You Can Be My Monkey Girl

    6. The Morning Benders – Boarded Doors (EP)
    http://www.myspace.com/themorningbenders

The Shins, The Beatles, Dr. Dog, Tacks, the boy disaster... Well, those names say it all.. What do you say? The Beatles, never heard of? .. Well, it was some boysband in the sixties, you should listen to them, they’ve got some nice songs.. But clearly stole all their songs from the Shins... They’re not that original, you know. Their entire back catalogue is made up of songs by other bands... just rip-offs... but good ones... Morning Benders however! They’re the original! You know what? Forget about the beatles... Just wait for the Debut Album by Morning Benders.

Favourite Tracks: Damnit Anna, Last Today
Favourite Lyrics: If you want to meet the devil, you’ve gotta go to hell

    5. Randall of Nazareth – Randall Of Nazareth

2006 was fingerpickin’ guitar-year, with great releases like James Blackshaw, Sir Richard Bishop, etc. In 2007 I seemed to have enough of that music. Not that i don’t like it anymore, but i just didn’t want anymore. The albums i have are sufficient. But Randall of Nazareth, well, he deserves some room in my room. It’s not just fingerpicking, it’s a bit bluesy slide-whatever folk this is kinda – music, with a great voice singing (think currituck co.). Nice songs, no myspace, so go search for yourself!

Favourite Tracks: Climbing Trees, It’s Nice To Know

    4. Beatbeat Whisper – Beatbeat Whisper
    http://www.myspace.com/beatbeatwhisper

Joanna Newsom released Ys about a year ago, and most people agreed it was the best record of 2006. I thought it was a nice one, but i haven’t listened to it 10 times or so. It’s just too much. The songs are way too long, and i’m MTV man! I need quick stuff, not concentrate too much! .. No not really, but still, Joanna Newsom’s songs were too long. But there a lot of alternatives. One of them is Beatbeat Whisper. She doesn’t sound that witchy as Joanna does, but still nice. And there’s a man as well! Nice duets, lovely lovely. A folk album that you should give a try if you like Vetiver, Mariee Sioux...

Favourite Tracks: Door To Door, Little Window

    3. David Vandervelde – The Moonstation House Band
    http://www.myspace.com/davidvandervelde

There must’ve been a time in our life when we all looked like Kurt Cobain. So did I, so did you. If you didn’t, then you’re probably someone who listened to House music. But we never sounded like Marc Bolan when singing, did we? Only Devendra Banhart did. Oh, And David Vandervelde. Moreover, he doesn’t only sound like him, he also makes the same kind of music. 60’s Stuff, that’s really good by the way!

    Favourite Tracks: Jacket, Nothin’ No

    2. Kid Harpoon – The First EP
    http://www.myspace.com/kidharpoon

No other guy in all the lists i make sounds as british as Kid Harpoon. There’s pop, a bit of reggae, a bit of Jeff Buckley, a bit of bob dylan, and so on. All his songs on this EP (none of them to be found on his myspace, too bad) sound different & show a real musical talent. It’s poppy, perhaps a bit commercial (oooeh, don’t we all despise that word....) but it sounds great. (i’m starting to run out of original things to say)

Favourite Tracks: Fifty Seven, Small Town War

    1. Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever
    http://www.myspace.com/boniver

Hype! Hype! Hype! Well, at least in the world of melancholic emotional wannabe-poets. This sounds so tender, so warm. I wish i was Emma, so i could listen to this album, think it was especially made for me. And Then I Would go up to Bon Iver and kiss him, and we’d marry, and every Thursday night, when he’s in the bar, i’d play our record. And i’d weep, oh my god, i’d weep like a child. Like the child i’m carrying around me, asking what that heavenly music is. (yeah, like being over the top!)

Favourite Tracks: Flume, Blindsided, Creature Fear (but it’s all great)
