The Young Republic
64,134 plays (8,563 listeners)
For three and a half years this group of musicians, the five core members still intact, has been occupied solely with improving at their craft, that being writing, arranging and performing music. While other bands of their generation spontaneously sky rocket to fickle fame on an almost weekly basis, The Young Republic is happy to watch the quick burn of modern music pass them over as they are preoccupied with older, more proven times. It is true what one might have read about the band being educated musicians and having a love of classical and more ìhigh browî music, but at the same time this is an American band that plays American music.
The deepest roots are in rock ní roll and the popular music of the 1950ís and 60ís, but depending on which song in the already large YR catalogue one examines, jazz, folk and country music play no small role in shaping the groupís sound. And even though the music of The Young Republic is very American, the bandís consensus favorite artist is The Beatles. Bob Dylan, The Band, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Gram Parsons, Hank Williams, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Television, these are more of the giants on whose shoulders they stand. It goes much further back as well to the Carter Family, French Impressionists, folk music from all over the world, Beethoven, Mozart and of course the master J.S. Bach. And while they may not be as obsessive over the music of their own time, they do have many current favorites and highly respect contemporary artists such as Jack White and Wilco. To their old fashioned ways of music making there is also a very progressive slant. A keen awareness for tradition allows them firm grounds on which to move forward with their sounds.
