This American Life (TAL) is a weekly hour-long radio program produced by Chicago Public Radio. It is distributed by Public Radio International and is also available as a free weekly podcast. TAL, hosted by Ira Glass, is primarily a journalistic non-fiction program, although it has also featured essays, memoirs, field recordings, short fiction, and found footage.
Each week’s show loosely centers on a particular theme. The theme of the show is explored in several “acts,” usually two to five. On occasion, an entire program will consist of a single act. A notable exception was the show “20 Acts in 60 Minutes”, which broke the normal convention by presenting twenty acts in one hour. Each act is produced using a combination of staff and freelance contributors.
Content varies widely by episode, and stories are often told as first-person narratives. The mood of the show ranges from gloomy to ironic, from thought-provoking to hilarious. The show often addresses current events, such as Hurricane Katrina in “After the Flood.” Listeners are just as likely to be introduced to subjects and or issues completely new to them as the island nation of Nauru in the story, “The Middle of Nowhere”. Often This American Life features stories which explore aspects of human nature, such as “Kid Logic”, which presented pieces on the reasoning of children.

Government funded which is a far cry better than privately owned corps which kowtow to their advertisers. I donate to This American Life annually to help keep it on the air and podcast-able. But this is all beside the point, if you feel that the government might have some involvement in what is being produced in this show then you need to listen to the episodes "Habeas Schmabeas", or "The Center for Lessons Learned", or "The Audacity of the Government". A complete archive can be found on their website at www.thislife.org You can stream full episodes. This is one of the only shows on the radio that make me sigh with relief.

Your point is? NPR is still heavily sponsored (funded) by government (at the state level, at least).

Sponsored by the gov't? I don't think you understand how public radio works... http://www.npr.org/about/nprworks.html

I'm trying to identify a song that plays in episode 318 ("With great power"), starts just before the 26 minute mark. Sounds like Philip Glass to me (is it true that he and Ira are cousins? Complicates looking this up!)

Thank you, lightupmyroom, the blurb on this page about incorrect tagging really peeves me. CPR is totally the artist.

Anybody know what song is being played under Ira's intro to episode #114: Last Words? It sounds like a cover of Philip Glass' soundtrack to Mishima using electric guitar but I could be completely off. I spent a good couple of hours trying to find it online today. Any help you guys can give would be awesome. Thanks.

BTW- Chicago Public Radio is what the podcast lists as an artist, thus it's not an inaccurate tag. CPR IS technically the artist and the specific program This American Life would translate to album; the specific episode -- track. It makes logical sense.

Can someone help identify one of the pieces music that plays underneath the 'Meaning of a Bird' segment of Poultry Slam '07? The one I'm thinking of sounds like it's from a film soundtrack, a bit Jon Brionish. I'm very familiar with the tune but can't place where I've heard it! Help!
