Name That Tune, Mark 2
18 Jul 2008, 14:57 by Darthemed
What better way to celebrate the release of the new Last.fm than by resurrecting one of its most hated journal games?
You may have seen these journals before, in which case I don't have to explain. But then again, you might not have seen them before, meaning I do have to explain. I post the first line of the first fifty songs that come up in my Party Shuffle, regardless of what they are, then you, the viewer, try to name them without looking the lyrics up. (Underlined stuff has been successfully guessed.)
The last time I did this was over two years ago, so I figure I'm entitled to do another one. Also, I'm curious to see how the general feel of my Party Shuffle has changed. The haphazard flow of the lines is usually amusing, anyway.
1. Marijuana!
2. You said I hurt you.
3. Spaceboy, you're sleepy now .
4. I work the angles sharp and precise
5. If I have the line, and you have the bass,
6. To share is to split,
7. In those silent shades of grey,
8. It's poetry in motion.
9. Everybody needs some time away,
10. Sex... Sex is perverted and sick.
11. I can't see the meaning of this life I'm leading.
12. You make me dizzy, Miss Lizzie.
13. Yeah, I traded laughs.
14. Realistically, It's hard to dig it all too happily,
15. And I cry, and no one can hear.
16. Every city is many cities, stacked one atop the other.
17. I came into this world high as a bird.
18. You know the day destroys the night.
19. I see the face,
20. Blind, white,
21. And on the cool check in,
22. Rebel, rebel and yell.
23. This is now, we live.
24. Call out the instigators.
25. Johnny's in America, no tax at the wheel.
26. Cool blue reason empties on the page.
27. He couldn't believe how easy it was.
28. Cut the wind.
29. Come on, she looked good.
30. We tried to fly.
31. Ate a mushroom, turned into Bali,
32. They headed southward from San Francisco,
33. Yo..yo..you're no good to me.
34. Long neck, short leash,
35. One eye goes laughing,
36. A white rainbow (a roaring aura).
37. Ein kleiner Mensch stirbt nur zum Schein.
38. Enslaved to the mind of lubricious thoughts.
39. Turn on the dishwasher. The blender. The electric can-opener.
40. In meiner Hand wird dein goldenes Herz zu Blei.
41. Well, I just shot a man to death.
42. We come on the sloop John B.
43. Kooler than Jesus?
44. You came twice last year, like a Sears catalog,
45. Down in the park with the machmen,
46. Molly was a good girl and she knew the reasons why.
47. Someone told me once,
48. Ridin' down the highway,
49. "I'm sorry; I mean I knew that people died."
50. "Awww yeah, this one goes out to all you muthafuckers out there."

My Post Punk/New Wave 80's Dream Band
16 May 2008, 17:54 by MurkyGlow
A lot of post punk/new wave music from the early/mid eighties is special to me, and carries with it, both for the time of my life and the explosive excitement of the related music scene, fond memories.
Sometimes I imagine a dream band of musicians taken from some of my favorite groups of that time. I’ve considered members from bands such as:
Visage/Ultravox
The Cure
Adam and the Ants
Siouxsie and the Banshees/The Creatures
Bauhaus/Tones on Tail/Love and Rockets
Japan
Depeche Mode
Echo & the Bunnymen
New Order/Joy Division
Shriekback
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
Soft Cell
Thompson Twins
Blancmange
Eurythmics
Thomas Dolby
Gary Numan
Here’s what I currently consider to be the potentially greatest post punk/new wave (with romantic-goth leanings) super group that never existed:
Budgie (The Banshees, The Creatures) on drums
Simon Gallup (The Cure) on bass
Daniel Ash (Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets) on guitar
Martin Gore (Depeche Mode) on keyboards
David Sylvian (Japan) on vocals
Trying to imagine the album these guys could have made together, circa ’83 – ’85, actually gives me a kind of mild buzz…

List your top 15 artists. Then list what song you first heard, what song made you fall in love with them, and what song is your current favorite.
1- Hunters & Collectors
1st: "Talking to a Stranger"
Love: see above
Current: it's a toss-up between either the above, "Skin of Our Teeth", or "Little Chalkie"
2- The Verve
1st: "Bittersweet Symphony" of course. It was all over MTV when I was ten.
Love: either "Weeping Willow" or "This Time"
Current: "Gravity Grave"
3- The Terminals
1st: "Vertigo"
Love: "Undertows"
Current: "In and Out of My Mind"
4- Moonshake
1st: "Capital Letters"
Love: see above
Current: either the above or "Seen and Not Heard"
5- King of the Slums
1st: "Fanciable Headcase"
Love: "Armed Robbery"
Current: a toss-up between "Mard Arse" or "It's Dead Smart"
6- Blam Blam Blam
1st: "There is No Depression in New Zealand"
Love: "Don't Fight It Marsha, It's Bigger Than Both of Us"
Current: "Learning to Like Ourselves Again"
7- R.E.M.
1st: I've known of them my whole life, so I don't know. Probably something pre-Document when I was a baby.
Love: Again, who knows, I've liked them since I was very little. Probably "Driver 8" or "Feeling Gravity's Pull" or "Fall on Me"
Current: "Feeling Gravity's Pull" is my perpetual favorite, but I've been listening to the acoustic versions of "Time After Time" and "The One I Love" (labeled as "This One Goes Out") at McCabe's Guitar Shop a lot, alongside the very slow variant on "Gardening at Night" that appears on the Best of 1982-1987 compilation that came out last year. I love the sort of Adventures of Pete & Pete feel that one has.
8- Thomas Dolby
1st: Probably "She Blinded Me With Science" when I was little.
Love: "Europa and the Pirate Twins"
Current: see above
9- New Order
1st: Yet again, another one I've been familiar with all my life, so I don't know.
Love: "Procession" was my favorite song of theirs when i was little.
Current: "Sub-Culture (John Robie Mix)" ... which most people like less than the album version, but I'm on a bit of a Robie kick lately, from C-Bank to Freeez and Cabaret Voltaire.
10- The Names
1st: "Nightshift" on Douglas Wolk's Rhubarb Cake program on WFMU.
Love: see above
Current: "I Wish I Could Speak Your Language (Pre-Mix)"
11- The KLF
1st: "3AM Eternal"
Love: see above
Current: "Kylie Said to Jason"
12- Nocturnal Projections
1st: "Marlene's Fish Shop"
Love: "You'll Never Know"
Current: "Restoration"
13- Jr. Walker & The All Stars
1st: "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)"
Love: see above
Current: the above again
14- ABC
1st: Another group I've known all my life. Who knows?
Love: "Many Happy Returns"
Current: "Show Me"
15- Eyeless in Gaza
1st: "John of Patmos" if I remember right.
Love: either "Out From the Day-to-Day" or "Dear Light"
Current: "Picture the Day" -
Andromeda Heights (1997) – Prefab Sprout
7 May 2008, 09:57 by fmera
Andromeda Heights was released in 1997 by Prefab Sprout and produced by Paddy McAloon and recorded by Calum Malcolm.
The production style and pacing of the album is a fairly strong departure from their previous works, especially Swoon (1984) and Steve McQueen (1985). The liner notes do list a thank-you to previous Prefab Sprout producer Thomas Dolby for "his encouragement and advice". This album's sound is akin in tone to the later works (post Painting It Red) of the The Beautiful South, with warm full tones and a more relaxed feel.
The liner notes state that the music was performed by the 'Andromeda Heights Orchestra', which is essentially Prefab Sprout with additional accompaniment. Original Sprout drummer Neil Conti does not appear, and is replaced by Paul Smith.

I've got $2.50 in quarters, so.....
19 Apr 2008, 14:28 by rtreynor
I've got $2.50 in quarters, so it must be time to listen to 10 songs on my desert island jukebox.
1.
Rise - Public Image Ltd. - Far more palatable and radio-friendly than Johnny Lydon's prior work with the Sex Pistols, this song displays musicians that can actually play their instruments, a nice Celtic undercurrent, and Lydon singing almost in pitch. Top it off with Lydon's repetitive mantra "Anger is an energy," it's not hard to see how my PiL cassette was worn through before I ever graduated from High School.
2. The Crane Wife 3 - The Decemberists
How do I love thee, Oh Third part of The Crane Wife trilogy of songs? Let me count the ways. A) the structure of verse - how line 1 and line 4 of each stanza are the same. B) It's basically a 1-4-5 chord structure, but the way that the song builds, with different instruments coming in as the song progresses. C) On a similar note, the chorus builds, so that the harmony soon becomes the melody. D) Interesting drumming keeps the song from falling into monotony. E) Lyrics so evocative that even I noticed them.
3. The Goodman - Kate Rusby
Great little Rusby folk song here. Some wonderful guitar strumming here. A great hook in the melody - you'll be singing along, even if you've never heard it before. The lyrics are signature Rusby, showing off her brand of humor. What I found so amusing about this song is that my wife interpreted the song as being about "a delusional husband"
4. I can't play a bunch of desert island tracks without having a cover tune in there. This time, I'm gonna stick my neck out and offer my all-time favorite cover tune of all time:
We Can Work It Out - Stevie Wonder. For some reason, it's very hard to have a decent cover of a Beatles song (which makes me question the songwriting abilities of Lennon/McCartney, but that's another journal entry). Joe Cocker, Stevie Wonder, and Earth, Wind & Fire have all done admirable jobs, but after them, the list of really good Beatles covers is mighty small indeed. I think what makes this version of "We Can Work It Out" my favorite is the rhythm and beat. Wonder really makes the song rock, even ignoring the 3/4 meter change of the original, so that the song can continue to rock out. Now, EW&F's
Got to Get You into My Life would also be in my desert island jukebox, but not this week. This week, I'm offering Stevie Wonder's, one of the holiest of holies in the canon of Rob's favorite songs ever.
5.
Wouldn't Mama Be Proud - Elliott Smith (Speaking of Beatles covers, Elliott did a pretty decent job with
Because at one point)
Honestly, I could have picked a half-dozen other Elliott Smith songs to be represented in this list, but this one will do nicely. Elliott had an ear for melody that was hard to equal. He had this knack for writing a song that you felt you'd heard before. Many times before. Yet, they weren't simple, and the melody would veer off in pleasant yet unexpected places from time to time - so right when you felt comfortable enough to sing along on your first listen, he screws up your confidence. This track shows that Elliott could write a song for a full band, and that he could play electric guitar as well as his acoustic.
6.
(Nothing But) Flowers - Talking Heads
While I had owned several Talking Heads records prior to Naked, this song was my gateway drug - the song that made me a true fan of the band. Their ironic apocalyptic environmental song, which feels like it could have been the inspiration for Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, was one of those rare songs that made me want to hear it again even before the song had finished. Having been schooled in the 80s on the world-beat grooves of Peter Gabriel, as well as Paul Simon's Graceland, it was fun to hear these art school punks take on the genre. And it's hard not to sing along with the "You got it, you got it" part. On a side note, Naked was the first CD I purchased. I was slow to give up on vinyl, but this album made my transition to CD pretty complete and instantaneous.
7. Bridge Over Troubled Water - Paul Simon
Speaking of Graceland, it's hard to pick a favorite Paul Simon song, since he's written so many beautiful ones. So this pick is based more on the performance than on the song itself. This version comes from Tom Petty's post 9/11 fundraiser America: A Tribute To Heroes. The "concert" was pretty much a failure - the paranoia in the weeks that followed after 9/11 meant that the performers did their songs from undisclosed locations without an audience present. This lack of audience interaction meant that most songs fell flat, and for a good long while, I thought that Paul Simon's song did as well. But, over the last few years, I've grown to really love this version. It embodies the emotion that followed 9/11. His singing is so fragile, weak, and revealed Simon's age; A surprising turn for a song that sings about comfort and strength. Simon reveals that he's the reluctant civil engineer of that Bridge, and the emotional effect is quite striking. The arrangement of the underlying music is looser and more ambient than I'd ever heard, sounding more like a Bill Frisell or Marc Ribot album than your typical Paul Simon live arrangement.
8.
I Love You Goodbye - Thomas Dolby
While I question the validity of the story - for some reason, I have a tough time believing that Thomas Dolby's trip to Louisiana involved stealing cars and going bowling in electrical storms - the song evokes a mood unlike most anything else that Mr. Dolby's ever done. This is one of those tracks from the canon of my all-time favorites, but the reasons are a bit elusive to me. All I know is that I find this song beautiful.
9.
I Think It Was December - Wendy & Lisa
Okay, I'm a sucker for the occasional rock track that borrows heavily from gospel music. This song could easily be replaced by Elvis Costello's
Deep Dark Truthful Mirror, Lyle Lovett's
Church, Peter Gabriel's
Don't Give Up, or dozens of others. But I chose this one, because it was the song that made me recognize that inner-Pandora: that I find songs with a gospel feel, 6/8 time signature, heavy harmonies, and a strong piano part appealing. But interestingly, I'm not a fan of gospel music in general. But the occasional track on an otherwise gospel-free album does tend to lift the song over the others, as well as lift my emotions.
10. Lysistrata - Utopia
While my Todd Rundgren fandom has waned over the last 10 years or so, he was among my Most Favorite growing up. I think it was the point where I realized he was just ripping off Carol King on his most successful songs that I started to fall out of love with his stuff. Lysistrata, however, still rocks. A great political statement, a fun take on a classic, and laden full of those awesome Todd Rundgren hooks. To me, this feels like the quintessential pop rock song. I don't know why it barely charted. Perhaps if them Utopia boys had made a video.....
So there you have it. 10 songs from my desert island jukebox. My MAS friends can now offer up their own, and we can start weening down this list to nothing. :)
