About this track

In order to get a chance to (almost) fully understand what the song means, we’ll need to recapitulate events Tori went through before and during she wrote From The Choirgirl Hotel.
First track and perfect “ouverture” for the album, “Spark” narrates the moment Tori figures out she just lost her baby.

“She’s addicted to nicotine patches.” Indicates us that she’s indeed expecting a birth.

“6:58 are you sure where my spark is.” It’s the exact time the heroïne feels like something wrong with her baby.

“Doubting if there’s a woman in there somewhere.” Probably doubting she’ll ever be a mother, Amos questions her feminity, in a potential mother way.

“You say you don’t want it, again and again but you don’t, don’t really mean it.”
She tries to convice herself she didn’t want the child to avoid the pain she’s in, but realises she’s lying to herself.

Two pretty cool live performances are available on Youtube. Live at Hollywood and Jool Hollands versions are my favorite ones.
