Tristania is a gothic metal band from Stavanger, Norway, formed in the end of 1996 by Morten Veland (male vocals/guitars), Einar Moen (keyboards), and Kenneth Olsson (drums). Soon thereafter, the band’s original lineup was fleshed out further with the addition of guitarist Anders Hidle, bassist Rune Osterhus, and vocalist Vibeke Stene (whom was recently replaced by Mariangela Demurtas).
The band’s music is usually classified as gothic metal, due to its strong ties with the genre’s history in addition to the band’s use of styles and traits stereotypical of the genre. However, they pride themselves on their musical diversity, as evidenced by the evolution of their music over the course of their five studio albums.
Tristania’s earlier albums Widow’s Weeds and Beyond the Veil put a lot of focus around classical like female vocals, haunting choruses and classical instruments such as pipe organ, flutes and violins. The leading voice on many of their songs was the menacing harsh vocals of Morten Veland. The atmosphere is also achieved by quite unique sounding guitar effects.
Morten Veland left in 2000 for “musical and social differences” to form the band Sirenia.
With the release of the World of Glass album in 2001, Veland’s growls were replaced by guest vocalist Ronny Thorsen from Trail of Tears, and clean male vocals were provided by veteran guests Østen Bergøy and Jan Barkverd. Despite the new lineup and a slightly changed style that turned off some fans, the album received critical acclaim.

Heard Mary and I'm not too impressed... if I had watched it not knowing it was for Tristania... I wouldn't even consider... Nothing against her, but she's just not that good o.O Vibeke has a very epic voice... but then Olzon wasn't very good in the beginning for NW... she's improved quite a bit... I'm going to be optimistic and hope she gets better :)

still bigotting about mary^^ judging her by poor quality videos of LIVE performance. HECK! if i would do that, i'd sometimes say that Osten is really bad. but he isn't! So is mary. wait for the nXt album... singing / performing live is a challenge, fun, but a real challenge, esp. for mary. she hasn't wrote any of those songs, nor is she a member of this band a long time... she CAN perform those old songs, but she is different... the band said so. and regarding what they were looking for, they made a good choce.

Maybe there wasn't a better singer that auditioned for the part! Would you preferred Forever Slave's singer? She auditioned for Nightwish and said she thought she was one of the best candidates I LOLed sooo much when I heard she didn't get it. Anette Olzon is much better than that woman.

I like Mary's voice and I've got no problem with, because 1) I never listened to Tristania activaly before and 2) Vibeke wasn't removed, she LEFT and obviously if the band wanted to carry on, they would need a new singer and why not somebody different to keep it interesting for the fans and themselves.
