Before I say anything, just let the record show that this festival is my absolute baby - my fave festival ever, in other words! :D I have been here about 10 times in the last 13 years & as long as I am still breathing, I will keep coming back year after year! :D

Now I've got that out of the way, on with the review! Arrived at about 8 in the evening on the Thursday, got in with the minimum of queueing & managed to find a tent-sized space, two minutes walk from the festival entrance & settled down for an early night to prepare for what promised to be an amazing weekend.

Friday dawned bright, warm & sunny & I joined the masses as we piled through the gates & into Lowlands Paradise once again! :D I grabbed a beer, a cola & a pancake & wandered over to India tent to catch the last few minutes of Henry Rollins & one of his legendary spoken word gigs. Didn't really hear a lot, but basically he told us that we are the future & that we should all join together, via social networking in order to defeat THE MAN. At least I think that was what be was talking about! Whatever, he got a rapturous reception. Then after meeting with my new Lowlands buddies & a chat & a look through the programme & trying to work out what we wanted to see this weekend, we walked over to Bravo tent & caught about half an hour of drum 'n' bass legend Roni Size. A few years ago I would've been right in there, dancing like crazy, but now I've become more of a band lover than a dancer, but they still sounded awesome & the wondrous elastic bassline of Brown Paper Bag still sounded incredible 10 years on. We made a break for Grolsch tent to see the beautiful The National who played a captivating set, drawn completely from their last two albums. The hypnotic Secret Meeting, the utterly beautiful Racing Like a Pro & the scorching set-closer Mr November were my highlights.

A dash over to Alpha tent (the biggest tent on the site) to see most of The Wombats & we were treated to a great, fast & furious set. I only know one song of them, but when it came around, Let's Dance To Joy Division, sent the whole tent into a bouncing frenzy. Then we had a gap to catch our breath & chill out then headed back to India for what turned out to be one of my highlights of the whole weekend - The Ting Tings. All I knew of them were the singles, but they just played a stunning, joyful & truly captivating set. They sounded so enormous & the songs were multiplied by a factor of ten live. They ended with the complete pop perfection of That's Not My Name - surely the most perfect pop song for many years & we all sang along to the hugely infectious chorus - "they call me quiet, but I'm a riot" - pretty much summed up the gig. It was awesome & was left with a wonderful ringing in my ears as we walked out of the tent very happy afterwards. :D Another bit of breathing space then we were back at Alpha for the pure indie pop of The Kooks. I only have their first album, but that didn't matter as they played all the big songs from it - Ooh La, Naive & a wonderful, bouncy She Moves In Her Own Way as well as new singles Always Where I Need To Be & the pure sunshine of Shine On. At one point, Luke Pritchard asked us all to sit down - I still have no idea why, but at least we all had a better view for a few minutes! Back to our tents to refuel & add a few layers of clothing then back to Bravo for the last half hour or so of ex-Moloko singer Roisin Murphy who proved that she is a pretty damn accomplished dance diva in her own right.

Saturday was another bright, warm & sunny day & it turned into a bit of an aimless wandering sort of day with not quite so much that I wanted to see. After another visit to the drinks & pancake stalls, wandered over to Grolsch & for no apparent reason, listened to a bit of Jaya the Cat who I had never even heard of, but they showed they have a potent mix of punk, reggae, dub & ska. A good enough soundtrack to eat my pancake & drink my beer to! There then followed a long period of aimless wandering where I bought myself a new baseball cap, watched some frankly insane peeps scrambling up a vertical wall for no apparent reason & just sat & chilled & watched the festival go by. Then somehow, I ended up back at Grolsch & heard a bit of Claw Boys Claw, another band I knew exactly nothing about but they were very very loud, that's all I can say really! Then over to India for the first of only three bands that I really wanted to see today - British Sea Power - a band truly in touch with nature - they have played gigs in all sorts of strange locations, including a cave! Therefore Lowlands was a pretty straightforward venue for them! The stage was adorned with trees & they walked onstage all wearing branches on their heads! They began with the simple All In It & played a stunning set, my highlights of which were No Lucifer with its 'easy, easy, easy' chant & the anthemic Waving Flags.

Next on my must see list were Franz Ferdinand at Alpha. Take Me Out provoked the biggest stampede into a tent that I saw all weekend, but we got all the best of the rest too - Do You Wanna, Michael, Matinee, 40" with a great extended singalong of the 'la la la la la' coda & they finished with an incendiary This Fire that very nearly set the tent on fire! Last on my list for today were dance legends Underworld at Alpha, one of the few dance acts that I will still go out of my way to see live. Well, what can you say? Hypnotic beats, pounding rhythms & songs of the class of King Of Snake, Cowgirl, Pearls Girl & of course the utterly stunning, showstopping Born Slippy that sent the entire tent into raptures & gave me an astonishing outbreak of goosebumps & the mother of all rushes. I've seen them several times before & they have lost none of their power & potency after all these years - awesome! :D

Sunday dawned ominously cloudy but for most of the day, the weather stayed kind & dry. I say 'most of', but more of that later! A big big day today & with what promised to be the best ever end to a festival. But first, after the pancake & beer of course, it was off to tiny Lima tent to catch the sweet & utterly lovely Lykke Li who captivated with a perfect indie-pop set frsh from Sweden. Dance Dance Dance was so sweet Complaint Department was cute but ballsy & Little Bit gave me more goosebumps & caused me to wipe a few tears from my eyes - this is one of the cutest, sweetest songs you'll ever hear in your life. Afterwards, went into a black hole for a little while - in other words, I can't remember what I did or where I went, but ended up back at Alpha for Gogol Bordello who are quite simply barmy, frantic, breathless & relentless. Every song caused mass pogoing & when they finally played their signature song Start Wearing Purple, the tent exploded & suddenly everyone was dancing in crazy circles - an awesome festival moment! After this had time to prepare for the grand finale, so chilled out outside Alpha near the lake & fortified by a few beers & such likje & a long chat with a crazy Aussie guy who had a brilliant idea of sending a munt (the currency used at Lowlands - basically a plastic token with the Lowlands logo on it) to a company in China & promising that within two days, this company could make a million munts & send them back to him! I wish I'd met him on the Friday, haha! Or maybe he was just full of crap! If you're reading this, dude - no offence!

OK enough blah - its festival highlight time at Grolsch! :D I refer of course to the mighty mighty beautiful perfect Elbow - my band of the year. I was there half an hour before & got almost to the very front. I really could double the length of this review just with talking about this gig, but instead here's a quick-ish summary! Guy Garvey was his usual charming, funny, chatty self. During first song Starlings, the heavens finally opened with a cataclysmic downpour that almost drowned the band out. Afterwards Guy said, "we are from Manchester where it rains 200 days a year!" Before Grounds For Divorce Guy asked, as usual what day it is. A few peeps shouted out then all was quiet, Then I shouted out "SUNDAY" & Guy looked at me & said "thank you. You've got a trustworthy face" - AWESOME, haha! :D During this song, there were some truly heroic attempts at crowdsurfing, not by me, but a couple of surfers passed over our heads. Before the 3 or 4 songs in one perfection of Newborn, Guy asked us if we were still ok & when we shouted back that we were indeed ok, he said " good cause here's a song all about death & pain"! Newborn had the usual effect on me - tears came down my face much like the rain was coming down outside. As long as I live, I will never ever tire of hearing this song. We reached the grand finale of One Day Like This - THE perfect set closer & halfway through all these little flags suddenly appeared out of nowhere that had the band's name & 'One Day Like This' written on them & by the end of the song all you could see was thousands of arms in the air & flags waving - this was the moment of the festival for me - impossible for me to explain what a magical moment this was. :D

Haha, that was supposed to have been a quick summary, oops! Anyway, over to Alpha for a dose of Belgium's finest export, none other than dEUS who played a stunning set ranging across all their albums. A few songs after I arrived, there was a hand tapping me on my shoulder - I turned around & there were my Lowlands buddies - yay! :D Highlights of the set were a sweet Smokers Reflect, a storming The Architect that caused outbreaks of crazed robotic dancing, an epic & truly menacing Bad Timing, a scathing Suds 'n' Soda & to my sheer delight, ending with the achingly sad & utterly lovely Serpentine - just amazing! :D

Then it was back to Grolsch for the next instalmenrt of this amazing festival finale & the moment of the festival I had been looking forward to the most. Really, how on earth can you describe how beautiful Sigur Rós are? I sure can't, there aren't enough words. To put it simply, this was one & a half hours of dreamlike music beamed in from a distant galaxy, via Iceland. Spellbinding is one way of describing it. Festival was a joy transforming halfway through from dreamy loveliness to gentle pounding & soaring atmospherics. Before Gobbledigook, they shyly asked us if we'd like to sing along. Hoppipolla still sounds like the cutest song you'll ever hear & I still think that this is as close as you will ever get to being hugged by a song. Everything in between was as equally beautiful, bewitching, soaring, sweet, skyscraping & just utterly perfect. This is music for dreams - happy dreams where everything is beautiful, serene, calming & perfect. Oh Sigur - we <3 you! :D

Well there you go - wow, what else can you say? Well, somehow we made it over to Alpha for the last half hour of Editors that sounded stunning, that's all you need to say. Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors was simply heartbreaking & the closing Fingers In The Factories was spiky, electrifying & scraped the sky.

So what a finale to a perfect festival. There were so many artists I didn't see - at least a dozen more would have been easy to do - but I did have to eat & drink & socialise too & there was a bit of overlapping, so sacrifices had to be made!

I just want to finish with a few dedications & thanks. Thank you to my newest & lovely Lowlands buddies, thank you to all the wonderful bands that played, thank you to the friendly & laidback Lowlands crowds, thank you to the drink stalls for the beer, cola & mojitos, thank you to the pancake stall for supplying my breakfast every day, thank you to the other food stalls especially the Indonesian part of the Asian section & their delicious Bami Kumplet (even though I managed to spill the sauce all over me on my way to my table, haha!), thank you to the mobile charging station that charged my phone for free (take note Glastonbury! :P), thank you to the weird & wonderful strangers I talked to throughout the weekend, thank you to the weather for being mostly kind & warm & sunny & finally thank you to the organisers for putting together this most wonderful, perfect festival that will always keep me coming back year after year! :D

To paraphrase the song -its just another few days for you & me in (Lowlands) Paradise. See you all next year!

It's been a while since my last blog - we have had a lot going on in the office (you can hear more in my "Living a Chilled Life" podcast - it's on iTunes and other good podcast hosts everywhere...) I have also been busy getting a new show ready for you!

We hear from listeners every day about what they like chilling with, and what they would like to hear more of. I'm not sure why - it could be the hot, muggy nights, or maybe there is just more stress around in this time of credit crunches and cutbacks - but we have had lots of fresh demand recently for something really relaxing late at night around bedtime. So here is what we have made for you....

"Midnight Chill" is our brand new nightly mix of the most relaxing sounds around. It's so laid back, it's horizontal... and it's made for the time of night when you might be too! Could it help you chill as you try and get to sleep on a hot summer night?

Every weeknight, midnight to 2am, you can have a listen and find out.

I've worked in radio for sixteen years, and I've done lots of shows which have tried to wake people up, and even more where we want people to keep listening more and more. But I don't think I've ever put together a show quite like this. If we've done it right, and you're ready for bed, you won't hear it all the way through!

Traditioneel blikt mijn vriendengroep (dit jaar uitgegroeid tot 22 mensen!) aan het einde van het festival terug op de hoogtepunten van Lowlands met een persoonlijke top-5. Van 1 naar 5 is dit die van mij:

Mijn hoogtepunt kwam van Franz Ferdinand, het enige concert dat ik dit jaar in de Alpha heb bezocht en voor mij alweer het vierde (!) van de Schotten. De laatste jaren toch echt weer lopen snakken naar Take Me Out en al hun andere hits. En het knalde weer ontzettend! Ongedwongen spelplezier, het publiek uitzinnig: ja laat die derde plaat maar komen, die nummers klonken geweldig!

The National was voor mij een goede tweede. Jammer dat dit hoogtepunt al op vrijdag om 16 uur moest komen, dit was meer iets voor de laatste dag (stinkend naar Lowlands maakt zo iets prachtigs vast nóg meer indruk). Lang naar uitgekeken, schitterend concert.

Op nummer 3 No Age. Wát een heerlijke pot herrie! Jammer dat de aanhang in de voorbije maanden nog niet wat groter gegroeid is (ik zag vooraan dezelfde mensen als in de bovenzaal van Paradiso in mei). En stonden Laura-Mary en Steven van Blood Red Shoes echt in het publiek te kijken? Geen wonder: ze hebben ze zelf aangeraden tijdens hun wederom geweldige set in India. Mijn vriendin ving bij No Age een 7-inch vinyltje van het nummer Eraser (hetzelfde plaatje kocht ik in Paradiso voor 5 euro) en we gaven drummer/zanger een hand om de afwezigheid van een signeerpen te compenseren. In euforische stemming (samen hetzelfde vinyl! een hand van de zanger! een geweldig concert!) had ik plots helemaal geen zin meer in Born Slippy. Toch nog een reden om naar The Gutter Twins te gaan kijken. Nu kende ik namelijk wél alle nummers, in tegenstelling tot bij het concert van februari, toen de plaat nog niet uit was. Ook mooi: de maansverduistering van dat moment. Misschien wel de mooiste Lowlandsavond ooit! Schitterend slot ook van The Gutter Twins. Ik heb gelijk hun t-shirt gekocht.
Ondertussen hadden mijn kompanen kennelijk het beste concert ooit beleefd bij Underworld, want de stemming die daar heerste was minstens zo euforisch als ik die kende van na No Age. Waarschijnlijk was de euforie alleen tijdens Born Slippy ontstaan, toch al het enige nummer waar heel Lowlands voor naar Underworld gaat...Ik hoorde dat maar één nummer van de laatste plaat werd gespeeld? Schande...

Maar dan ben ik nog maar bij nummer 4 uit mijn top 5. Ik durf hem aan: Santogold. Wat zij met haar enthousiasme en stem voor elkaar krijgt werkte uitstekend en toen ze probeerde om tóch op geplande eindtijd het podium te verlaten (nadat ze wel bijna 20 minuten te laat begon) heb ik mijn stem kapot geschreeuwd om haar terug het podium op te krijgen, wat warempel lukte! Zeker geen geplande toegift. Dat band en aankleding inderdaad misschien iets te strak waren kan me niks schelen.

Mijn top5 sluit ik af met Hot Chip. Razend knap hoe deze groep hun nummers speelt en met elkaar mixt en toch toegankelijk en dansbaar blijft klinken! Lekker feest en tóch meer dan een simpele bijeenkomst voor dansliefhebbers.

De top5 werd net niet gehaald door Blood Red Shoes (wél harder en bozer dan tijdens de laatste London Calling) en Yeasayer.

Verder heb ik als enige van mijn 21 vrienden die mee waren mogen kijken naar Midnight Juggernauts (de zondagafsluiter en hét alternatief voor Editors en The Roots) dat al snel het hippe dansvolk met hun zonnebrilletjes uit de X-Ray wegjaagde met keiharde dansrock! Wereldplaat ook, stoer concert en minstens zo hard staan springen als bij Franz Ferdinand een dag eerder!

Ook leuk vond ik Infadels (hoe kan het ook anders, jammer alleen van Giel Beelen en de heisa met die Dennis van MTV...), Laura Marling & Lykke Li (die gaan het wel maken denk ik) en Los Campesinos! Met de zon erbij heeft dat Charliepodium een lekker sfeertje daar in de hoek!

Waar ik niet zo goed weet wat van te denken vond ik Tricky. Zijn laatste plaat viel me positief op (wat zeg ik, ik vind hem geweldig!) maar wat hij daar voor show weggaf zorgde voor wisselende gevoelens...ben benieuwd of die zangeres nog wat centjes overhoudt aan haar zangpartijen want Tricky liet het grootste werk aan haar over. Eerlijkheidshalve: ook ik heb het laatste kwartier alleen maar over de regen lopen smsen naar mijn vrienden in de andere tenten...
Voor Tricky trouwens speciaal een kaartje voor MGMT gekocht zodat ik die veilig kon overslaan in de India. MGMT blijft toch één van de interessantste nieuwe bands (duo's?) van het laatste jaar!
Vanwege de regen heb ik ook maar Crystal Castles overgeslagen. Iets waar ik enorm spijt van heb want die poncho die ik ben gaan halen heb ik toch niet meer nodig gehad. Daardoor heb ik trouwens wel God Save The Queen toevallig vanaf de camping horen meelallen door het Grolschpubliek! Een bijzonder moment.
Ook van Sigur Rós, waarvan ik nog zeker de eerste drie kwartier heb meegekeken, weet ik niet wat ik moet zeggen. Ik kende de reputatie, ik ken de muziek sinds Takk… (2005) maar het gevoel dat na het luisteren en nu bekijken van Sigur Rós toch altijd weer blijft hangen is dat van gebakken lucht. Goed, als men dat zegt van Tool (de afsluiter van vorig jaar) kan ik daar heel geïrriteerd van raken dus laat ik dit van Sigur Rós maar inslikken. Tuurlijk is het mooi! Maar niet zó mooi dat ik Midnight Juggernauts er voor had willen overslaan…

Grote tegenvallers vond ik Tom Baxter (mijn eerste act van de vrijdag) en Hercules and Love Affair. Wát een toewijding als je als band naar eigen zeggen een uur geleden je bed pas uit komt! Geen wonder dat het zo’n slappe boel was. Lekker ding wel, die Nomi! Maar Antony werd node gemist…

Een heerlijke Lowlands met prachtig weer, de meest fijne muziek en 21 vrienden met de meest uiteenlopende muzieksmaken. Volgend jaar weer, dan voor de zesde achtereenvolgende keer!

Vrijdag
Fenin - Lekkere combi van dub en techno.
Roni Size - Vond ik 10 jaar geleden erg goed. Is niet veel in die tijd gebeurd... Zo zo.
Kid Carpet - Leuk! Fischer Price dance punk. CDtje gekocht.
½ Hot Chip - Viel tegen.
½ The Ting Tings - Lekker. Einde meegepakt. Had wel meer van m'n minuutjes bij Hot Chip mogen lenen.
Pendulum - Dat was vet, dat! Tent ondersteboven.
The Flaming Lips - Vette show, mooie liedjes, zanger was wat pushy: doe NU euforisch fanatiek mee! Maar ze eindigen in de plus hoor.

Tunng - Staan in m'n overall top 10 :). Was beetje duwen en trekken. Uitvallende apparatuur... Wij als lief publiek zorgden voor een niet-mislukt optreden.
Vive la Fête - Vet.

Digitalism - Lekker. Wel veel rook op het podium. Feest.
Underworld - Als vanouds gaaf. Kon veel meezingen :P
Diplo - Pittiger dan verwacht. Maar 'n feestje.
½ Modeselektor - Beterder: Vet.

Zondag
Lykke Li - bleh! zong met een tapeje met zichzelf erop, tegenvallende stem, "jullie moeten dansen!", kwartier voor tijd podium af en dan mogen wij d'r terug gaan klappen. pfft!
Hercules and Love Affair - lekker. bij nummer zoveel erachter komen: ooh dit ken ik wel (Blind)
(even) Yeasayer - Beetje vaagjes...
½ The Fratellis - Nog ge"NANANA NANANAAA"t: leuk, maar ok...
MGMT - Rare set zonder eindklapper... Maar leuk bandje!
½ Black Kids - Leukste stukje meegemaakt: ze kwamen op het eind wel een beeeeetje los.
Simian Mobile Disco - Feestje. Had ik graag uitgekeken, maar:
Sigur Rós - Wat een afsluiter! Onbeschrijvelijk. Genieten.

Ze hadden niet een gat moeten programmeren, anders was ik ook naar Ellen Allien geweest. Maar die ga ik nu 12 september zien met meer Modeselektor in Watt (voormalig Nighttown).
