William Fitzsimmons was the youngest child of two blind parents. He was surrounded from childhood by the sounds of musical instruments, including pianos, classical guitars, recorders, and the family pipe organ, as well as by recorded music — classical orchestral and organ works, and occasionally folk music by singer-songwriters such as Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and James Taylor. Fitzsimmons also claims influences including Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens, Aimee Mann, Patty Griffin, Ben Gibbard, and Sun Kil Moon.
Fitzsimmons started his own musical endeavors as a young child with piano lessons and elementary-school recitals and Christmas plays, eventual studying the trombone and guitar. While he has played music for most of his life, the process of writing and recording his own work began during his graduate studies, and the completion of a master’s degree (he holds an M.A. in mental health counseling).
Fitzsimmons has a gentle and haunting, yet potent vocal style, which rests atop harmonically layered vocals, guitar lines, and whatever other instrumentation fits his fancy at the moment (e.g., mandolin, melodica, flute, clarinet, piano, slide guitar, etc.).
Although Fitzsimmons has tended to write and record rather than to perform live, he has recently begun to play in intimate settings in New York, London, and Los Angeles.
In December 2006 Fitzsimmons released his second full-length album, Goodnight, consisting of thirteen songs, completely self-produced and self-written; the subject matter includes broken family and relationship dissolution. (read more)
