My mid-year review of 2008 releases
28 Aug 2008, 03:26 by FinalPizzaHut
Alright, so we're well past the halfway mark of 2008, and while it's a bit early for me to start making a top 20, I still like to make a journal of all the releases I've heard in a year, to keep track of them for myself, and hopefully to help someone else find something good. This will be updated on pretty much a daily basis, as I have a substantial backlog of music that I have yet to really piece together my thoughts on, or to even listen to at all. Also, I encourage recommendations, and nothing is off limits, so don't be afraid to toss something out there!
Oh, and feel free to let me know if I should perhaps re-evaluate some of these albums. Sometimes really great material can get lost in the mix, and I'm sure I'll be periodically changing some of these ratings as it is.
Italicized text indicated album ratings added at last update.
Bold text indicates albums that should be picked up pretty much no matter what. Note that these are not necessarily the albums with the highest scores, but ones that have stood out as something special. These are the best of the best.

Ecleticism
27 Aug 2008, 17:24 by identitate
Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. You can compute your own score at http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/eclectic.php
My eclectic score is currently
93/100

Bands much underappreciated, part 1: artists with over 1,000 listeners but less than…
21 Aug 2008, 19:58 by rozebanaan
this is a 2-part journal about artists that don't get the recognition they deserve (well, actually it's just about giving you all musical tips if you're bored and looking for something new which nobody knows about)
in the second part it will be about bands with less than 1,000 listeners...even more obscure!
in random order:
1. Beatbeat Whisper
A guy and a girl make some nice folk songs together..it's all very quiet and soothing. Ayla Nereo sometimes reminds me of one of these new generation folk singers (Alela Diane, Mariee Sioux) and i prefer it when she sings... the other guy, also known as That Blasted Hound (which can be downloaded for free on archive.org) is okay too...
For Fans Of: softly singing whispering folk songs
2. Jacob Borshard
People who are into ukelele pop must have heard of this guy. But if you like twee this is stuff for you. and it's free! On www.creebobby.com you can download two albums... go Ukelele!
3. Benji Cossa
You like sixties pop? This guy is from the Magik Markers label (the label, not the band) and makes lo-fi songs that are reminiscent of The Kinks or the beatles. Oh well, anything sixties and poppy actually.
4. Misophone
A great cover from Daniel Johnston, Sound like a super cool version of Beirut but better. This is just amazingly underrated...songs as if they were recorded in the thirties, found just last year, and probably being legendary in 10 years. So it must be...
5. Paleo
Sounds a bit as if he could be part of Sunset Rubdown or Wolf Parade, or Clap your Hands Say Yeay, but he just keeps it all acoustic. Voice to get used to, but he has got great songs, especially his debut album Misery Missouri. you can find 365 songs of him online, but it's hard to pick and choose the favourites (mostly because i haven't listened to all of them)
6. The Love Letter Band
Everyone keeps on looking for the New Neutral Milk Hotel, but this band is slowly reaching that level. It's a bit more twee sometimes but if you hear these guys sing "No Grave is gonna keep me down", you don't care about Neutral Milk Hotel no more. lo-fi godliness
7. Chris and Thomas
The Simon & Garfunkelof the 21st Century. Not as calm though (well still acoustic)...but it's got somewhat more rhythm...also think of Kings of Convenience
8. Fire On Fire
New Weird America, but then with songs. Animal Collective could've done an intimate acoustic session covering Hangman's Blues. It's Also Bob Dylan. Not all songs are that good, but good enough for you to just check it out.
9. imadethismistake
tEenage punk, but it appeals to me. great anyway
10.Soft Hearted Scientists
another mostly acoustic band, which makes me think of the flaming Lips on tranquilizers.
That's it!
the list with less than 1,000 listeners is longer (25), but that will be for in a couple of days... -

Heaven Sent. It was heaven-sent.
20. What is your favorite album by 2? (Ride)
Nowhere. Nothing can match its grandeur and transcendent bliss. I should probably listen to Going Blank Again in full (I don't have much interest in Carnival of Light or Tarantula except maybe as documents of the band's demise), but I doubt it could take away the place that Nowhere has in my heart.

1.
Shadow of a Doubt
2.
