Youssou N'Dour
On Tour43,482 listeners (319,009 plays)
Youssou N’Dour may have come attention to Europe and America when he contributed backing vocals to Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes”, but he’d been performing and recording in his native Senegal for some time.
A renowned singer, songwriter, and composer, Youssou’s mix of traditional Senegalese mbalax with eclectic influences ranging from Cuban samba to hip hop, jazz, and soul has won him an international fan base of millions.
He is endowed with remarkable range and poise, a composer, bandleader, and producer with a prodigious musical intelligence. The New York Times most recently described his voice as an “arresting tenor, a supple weapon deployed with prophetic authority”. N’Dour absorbs the entire Senegalese musical spectrum in his work, often filtering this through the lens of genre-defying rock or pop music from outside Senegalese culture.

wow! I've listened to him here and there but didn't realize he did the soundtrack for Kirikou and the Sorceress (a very cool animated movie based on an African folk tale, if you haven't seen it... see it) also, he covered Jealous Guy? Gosh, I need to do my homework :)

I hate the new single 'Wake Up' with Neneh Cherry, the way I love '7 seconds' is how much I hate this track!

To finish it up, you have to know that Youssou publishes different songs for the Western market than in his native Senegal. Youssou's hard-core Senegalese Mbalax stuff is the Youssou you should get to know; chock full of complex rhythms and wonderful melodies. On Last.fm hear e.g. Liggeey, Sabar, Alboury.

Youssou is one of the most accomplished living artists today. I rate him up there with Bob Marley and Fela Kuti. If you ever get the chance to see him live, don't miss it!!! Mbalax, the Senegalese music style he made popular in the 80s, takes some getting used to, but let me tell you, most other music will sound too slow after that ;-) 7 seconds is soooo old.
