3-12/7/8 - Rototom Sunsplash Festival

Well, I hit another used CD place this week. This time Fantasyland Records in Buckhead. Got some pretty good finds too...I think. I was excited to find the Anthony Phillips album, on vinyl yet, but have read since that it is the more pedestrian of his efforts, and certainly not up to his Genesis-like work on The Geese and the Ghost. I still have to listen to it though, so I can't say myself.
Zani Diabate, I would assume by name is a relative of Toumani Diabate the kora player, but that *is* an assumption on my part; the sparse liner notes do list him as being a Malian Griot, but make no mention of the world renowned Toumani or his legendary father Sidiki Diabate. The music is much more R&B orientated than I would have imagined, but still keeps that traditional sound that I love from West Africa.
I am a huge Rush fan. Until relatively recently, however, I felt their best effort ended with Signals with perhaps a two tracks from Grace Under Pressure thrown in. Sure I bought the later albums when they came out, but returned more and more to listening to the "classic' albums from earlier in their career.
Well, I've started buying the back catalog in anticipation of seeing them play later this month. And you know what? This stuff rocks! A cliche, perhaps, but none the less true.
The Peter Gabriel album is a soundtrack to the film "Rabbit-proof Fence" about children from the "Stolen Generation" of Australian Aborigines. The music is beautiful, of course, but if you can catch the film (it shows here in the States on IFC quite a bit) I would recommend it for its story as well. -

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour
I have to thank Thomas Park for linking to a lot of good Ambient and Drone through a community on my Live Journal; bands that include his own Mystified, which I am enjoying very much. Some of these net labels such as Webbed Hand have artists downloads for a low price or even free that let you experience their work. It speaks well for the future of music that it's the love of thw work that will drive creativity, not a paycheck.
Trevor Rabin's 90124 is a collection of demos that eventually became Yes's 90125....and proves that without him and producer Trevor Horn such a landmark album of the 80's would never had existed; for better or worse, but that's your call.
The Ozric Tentacles Cd's are another group that somehow I managed to not rip to the iPod the first time around. I like them for what they are...space jam...but as a friend once told me, you've heard one, you've heard them all. I don't think that's exactly true, but I do sometimes get lost which album I may be listening to sometimes....maybe that's the point!
And finally, I have been raiding my wife's collection for stuff. We have very different tastes, but one or two jewels stand out, such as The Beatles. Next week: I steal all of her Queen albums...I think she has them all!
Cheers! -

on software and rising computational abilities.
11 May 2008, 11:22 by 0k0k0k0
being the total failure in computer science that i am, i shall instead attempt to piece together a few words of thought regarding the evolution of software complexity in relation to storage size.
before the advent of multigigabyte (terabyte nowadays) end-user systems program design often took the utilitarian view, evidenced by lackluster UIs of olde and cumbersome circumlocutions when issuing commands. programmers then had to make do with working in cramped quarters, squeezing in everything of import (the primary functions for their specific tasks) while sacrificing others (all other code for human aesthetic tastes and conveniences - examples of which are status messages, prompt design, the various methods of depicting currently running processes, etc). all within 640-kilobyte machines and even less.
those were the only things computers then can store and operate.
a few decades later give or take a year or so as advances had been made in both hardware and software left, right and center programs, while significantly larger than those used long ago, basically hadn't strayed far from their original building principles. all of them today, still mostly built on top of another. simple general routines and subroutines clumped together for use by more specialized programs: the keyboard/mouse/monitor interface drivers for use by anything ranging from games to porn viewing for instance. human-friendly software environments gradually developed as the number of ignoramuses with money who can't even tell cd-drive trays from coffee trays increased.
all the while focus changed from you making the computer work to making the computer work for you. end of story.
or maybe not. storage capacity increased to such an extent that most of it will, for all intents and purposes, be left unused by all but the most demanding applications. so all sorts of "filler", one might say, popped up to fill the void. images, videos, documents, music, anything else that can be digitized.
compare the average device driver to your havittety mp3s. a few kilobytes on average, one or two pushing one or two-megabyte size, compared to at least 55 megabytes for a tolerable copy of the album. a few kilobytes for directing the hardware-software interfaces, a crapload of megabytes for representations of audio signals in digital form. funny, really, in that while one was handcoded at some point the other was merely compiled from some type of converter or another which was, of course, handcoded as well in the beginning.
morals of the story:
1. nothing. i ranted.
2. simplicity builds complexity builds simplicity. why did the chicken cross the road? to get to the other side. how? an overly complicated plan involving spoons, a pile driver and a ball of twine. high ideals arise from convenient assumptions by the time of their devising. art, as such, should be given more value for its end results, not its means. a fact still lost on most kiddies who make/listen to mediocrity due to some hackneyed ideas of "self-expression" and "creativity".
now, some appropriate links.

In the Heart of the Moon adlı albüm başdöndürücü bir sese sahip.

The music of 2007
2 Jan 2008, 21:48 by Meliora
Top 10 Overall Albums of 2007 (Alphabetical)
The Besnard Lakes – The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse
**Best Anytime Album** Probably my fallback album of the year. Although I classify it as indie rock, it touches on more psychedelic tones in the instruments, while taking cues from oldies pop in the vocals. Every track feels epic as it shifts through musical and temperamental phases, but my favorites are probably the opening “Disaster,” the haunting “For Agent 13,” and the catchy “Devastation.” Not to be missed. Oh, Canada!
Burial – Untrue
**Sexiest Album** The sophomore album from dubstep pioneer Burial, Untrue is a masterpiece of laid-back beats layered with haunting melodies. Although perhaps not as brilliant as his 2006 debut, it can still hold it’s own riding the fence between ambient and dance electronica. Add this to some sultry candlelight, and I guarantee you will get some action. My track picks: “
Near Dark,” “
Untrue,” and “
Archangel.”
Caribou – Andorra
Similar to The Besnard Lakes, this album straddles indie pop, electronica, and shoegaze with such layered skill that it makes an irresistible listen. It sounds like what I would imagine drowning in champagne would feel like, particularly on tracks like “After Hours” and “Melody Day.”
Eluvium – Copia
**Best Album to Sleep to** This album inspired me to go back and listen to Eluvium’s earlier albums, which I have to admit are more to my liking. That said, even the most bland product of a genius is better than most of the competition, and thus the appearance of Copia in my top ten. Just perfect, lush, ambient electronica. My favorite track is “
Indoor Swimming at the Space Station,” which is almost like listening to Basinski’s Disintegration Loops backwards.
The Field - From Here We Go to Sublime
**Best Album for Running** I do believe this was my most listened to album of the year. Surprisingly, given the repetition of the songs, the music never gets monotonous or stale; on the contrary, you seem to hear something new every time you listen. One of my favorite tracks of the year is “Silent,” whose driving beat and haunting vocals are so enveloping, you’ll wonder where the last seven minutes of your life went.
Lucinda Williams – West
**Best Album for a Melancholy Mood** Country-rock at it’s best. Tracks such as “
Are You Alright?,” “
Learning How To Live,” and “
What If” explore the sadder corners of life alone, while “
Unsuffer Me” and “
Come On” have more of a bitter, kick-ass flair to them. A solid album filled with distorted guitars and Lucinda’s rich, gravelly alto.
Menomena - Friend And Foe
Disclaimer – I didn’t include this album because of my (gossamer) connections to the band, or even out of loyalty to local rockers. I was actually skeptical at first, given my lackluster reaction to their 2003 debut, I Am The Fun Blame Monster! But the lyrics on the opening track, “Muscle N Flo,” brushed away my scorn, before the gorgeous keyboard on “wet and rustling” quickly cemented my adoration for this album. And, like a good wine, it only gets better with age.
Natural Snow Buildings - The Dance of the Moon and the Sun
Simply gorgeous. This album alternates dizzily between long and short, vocals and instrumentals, ambient drone and plucky folk, creating a stunning landscape that cuts between electronic and experimental music. This was a close contender for the best album to fall asleep to, but it has a little too much depth and beauty to be truly relaxing. The opening track, “carved heart,” is a great introduction; another favorite is “Rain Seranade.” But really, just set aside some time to listen to the whole thing. It’s worth it.
Sleeping States - There The Open Spaces
**Best Album for Rainy Days** Another unclassifiable album, somewhere between the alt-folk of Devendra Banhart, the post-rock of Bark Psychosis, and the guitar-driven sound of Benoît Pioulard. With some lo-fi fuzz and field recordings thrown in for good measure. “
Rain Check,” “
Planning My Escape,” and “
I Wonder” are some of my favorite moments from this album.
A Sunny Day In Glasgow - Scribble Mural Comic Journal
**Trippiest Album** I think I read this album described as sharp knifes and dreamy pop vocals wrapped in layers of thick distortion – and if I didn’t, it’s still an accurate description. Somewhat of a throwback to shoegaze, this album is a pure high for all your senses. Another top track of the year is “
5:15 Train.”
