Wiki

Psychedelic rock is a genre of rock often (but not always) inspired or influenced by psychedelic (psychotropic) drugs, especially LSD and marijuana.

The musical style often incorporates flowing, hypnotic rhythms and use of guitar and vocal effects, most notably the Wah-Wah pedal which is either used to make a fast, funky but psychedelic sound or used slowly to create a psychedelic wave of guitar sound.

There is a little debate as to which band was first known as being but it is likely that it was either 13th Floor Elevators or The Charlatans (not the more recent UK band with the same name). Both of these bands had produced psychedelic rock albums around 1964/1965, 2 years before The Beatles released Revolver which included a very psychedelic song called Tomorrow Never Knows. Which ever band was the first, the Elevators seemed to be the epitome of the genre right from their first album The Psychedelic Sounds Of The 13 Floor Elevators which had psychedelic LSD inspired artwork and writings on the cover.

Much of The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s output was psychedelic rock driven as was Cream

In the UK at the end of the 1960s and into the 1970s bands such as Pink Floyd carried the psychedelic rock banner starting off with the first album Piper At The Gates Of Dawn] and carrying on to albums such as Meddle and The Darkside Of The Moon.

There is some blurring between the genres and especially with bands such as Hawkwind.

Unfortunately some users are easygoing about tagging music/artists with this tag but do not look at them as they were the main style of the bands but just one more…

I think intelligent tagging is, sorry, tagging with all the feeling you have for the rolling music. And that's now for me, even if I don't know them!

i feel the problem is tagging artists with a list of their eclectic musical styles. that goes into tag radio but might yield a very different kind of song of that artist with an unexpected style. i think, intelligent tagging is tracks tagging and keeping tags generic enough for artists. but alas, if people perceive an artist/group as 'psychedelic' (or whatever), they tend to tag each and every track as 'psychedelic', even when they play bossa nova ...

Is it me or is there nothing even remotely psychedelic about most 'psychedelic' rock bands? :/

The Doors were fairly eclectic musically but I think much of their music fits into the psychedelic rock genre well. They were also known for having taken psychedelic drugs. I think as a musician the psychedelic rock genre needs to be widened to include more recent bands as well as the stereotypical psychedelic rock bands of the 1960s.
