Wed 25 Apr – Lightning Bolt, White Mice, Drums Like Machine Guns, Chamomile, Bug Sized Mind, Attitude Problem

When I first stepped into the place I knew the concert was going to be an awesome experience. There was projector displaying various trippy images and there was some crazy electronic glitch/noise playing over the speakers.

After a few minutes Chamomile, consisting of two drums and a bass took the uh... floor. They seemed to mix with . They were pretty good, I liked their style a lot. I would like check them out but at the moment I don't have any money to buy their album... oh well.

After Chamomile came Bug Sized Mind. It was one guy with a laptop and a whole bunch of electronic stuff. He was playing sort of droney electronic noise, most comparable to Black Dice. The act itself wasn't very exciting but the music was pretty good, nothing I would go crazy about though.

I didn't see much of the last act, White Mice, because I was trying to hold my place up right in front of Brian Chippendale's drums which was in another corner of the room. I got their CD the day before the concert and I wanted to check them out, but that golden spot that I had was too good to give up.

Finally, the main act, Lightning Bolt starting their ear shattering noise. I had a prime location and was lucky enough to capture some really good pictures. But pictures were the last thing on my mind, the music was amazing (and ear crushing). The crowd was great... it seemed to be a big pulsating blob, eventually I found myself all the way in the front row holding on to Brian Chippendale's cymbal... awesome. With the wind from the bass drum cooling my legs my dreams finally came true when they played PlayDracula Mountain, it was totally worth the $8 and temporary hearing loss. Every single song was amazing.

On that note about temporary hearing loss my ear plugs unfortunately fell out after about five songs so my ears got pretty ravaged. Just some good advice to anybody going to a Lightning Bolt concert, BRING EAR PROTECTION. Not only does it suck that your ears get destroyed, but when your ears take that much fatigue in that short amount of time a lot of the music just sounds like screeching. My ears are still ringing and it has been almost two days so far, but I don't regret going at all.

Afterwards, with a drenched shirt and an awesome new poster I left the venue and headed home. What an experience.

Check out the pictures I took here:
