Fri 18 Apr – RJD2, Dälek, Happy Chichester

Another great show that I almost missed out on, thanks to Saul Williams being sold out.

Happy Chichester - Never heard of this guy & didn't know what to expect, but definitely was impressed. Not many artists out there can combine acoustic guitar, beatboxing, and keyboarding all in one set. I especially liked when he looped beatboxed drums and added melodies and vocals over them. And what was up with his vocal didgeridoo?? Dope.

Dälek - I'd heard his name before, but never heard any of his stuff. I remember the beats being very loud and not hearing his vocals. It sounded like it would sound good through my home speakers (I'll take Mike's word for it). I'll have to check him out. His DJ was definitely into the set as well. Dälek's stage presence was pretty tough tho. I felt like he was going to come down & jack me, lol.

RJD2 - As fans of his music we were praying the whole set wouldn't consist of The 3rd Hand stuff. Luckily our prayers came thru as his set was a nice mix of live instrumentation, djing, and singing. Definitely one of the best shows I've seen. He started the set out right with Play1976. The live instruments fit nicely over his djed songs and sounded exactly as they should - but with a little live-show switchin' it up. I was also impressed with his ability to play damn near every instrument on stage with his band (which included Happy). And with some of the stuff that wouldn't have sounded good completely live, he played the drum pads on the MPC. And the vocal samples from the instrumental stuff, they sang! Oh and lets not forget him putting on the Mario character glove and playing out some sounds from Mario 1. And you can tell he's a Mario fan as his band ended the set with a live rendition of the 1st level of Mario 1. And the 3rd Hand stuff sounded very good live...I was really hatin, now I need to go back and listen to it. My only complaint: His version of PlayJune wasn't that long :-(
