THE NU.LAST.FM. Feel the pain. [DRAFT]
4 Aug 2008, 12:03
(Hang on, lemme fetch my sunnies, my eyes are getting sore from staring at all this whiteness... NUclear radiation)
THIS IS JUST SOME RANDOM THOUGHTS OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD.
Confusion hangover/overdose. From the totally blindingly brand-spankingly bleach-whitened-ly sparklingly nu last.fm.
Because new is always the best. Apparantly.
Day 1
I was shocked when I returned to good old last.fm last month.. imagine my surprise (I'm sure many people know that feeling) when I saw, in front of eyes, something that looked vaguely like a Myspace/Facebook offspring (if they ever had an offspring). What happened? Did Chuck Norris land here and took over/hacked? Why was everything so out of place... and so blindingly white? I could almost feel the blood dripping from my eyes as I stared.
Gosh, my eyes must have aged 5 years (now 10 and counting) in the minutes that followed I spent trying to navigate around the blinding brightness.
At last, I came upon the answer to my question.
REVAMP
What the...
And what followed was a myriad of very mixed (mostly negative) emotions and failed attempts at navigation. Suddenly, last.fm felt so alien to me.
What is this flash player thing?
Where the heck did the shoutbox go?
Noooooo... gimme my neighbours back! *Waaaa*
What happened to...
Gaaa, it's loading so slowly... *Zzzzzz*
And where was Paint it Black?
Lovely ads, even though they don't seem to be smarted than they were before.
I felt disappointed. And annoyed. Because, let's be honest, the new layout is catastrophic.
The old last.fm was definitely NOT in my list of websites-needing-redesign. Why, it was pretty much close to perfection. Why couldn't IT have been worked on instead? What is so wrong about it?
Oh wait. The ads.
Sure, it felt like a whole new minty breath was blown into last.fm, but it had this... disconnected feeling about it. Stuff is scattered everywhere, the old dashboard was more informative, it suddenly became a chore to find even some of the familiar features because, apparantly, they all disappeared (at least for me) either amongst all the whiteness or into oblivion of nothingness.
It was a pain to search out journals linked to some artists and groups. They were suddenly not so easy to find anymore. Buried within rabbles, concealed from prying eyes. And as for journals linked to artists.. they disappeared.
O Last.fm, what have becomest of thou?
Oi, can you hear me?
Hey, do you care?
Guess not.

Day 2
I think I need a tourist guide to get around this place now...
---
Day 3
Give me a break. I'm not going back on.
Infact, I QUIT!
You heard it!
---
Day 4
(Too addicted to quit...)
---
Day.. I-don't-know
Finally! The prayers have been answered! Paint It Black is back!
*Waa*
Hmm.. it doesn't look less bright with this..
How depressing.
They should rename it Paint It Emo.
---
Still trying to get used to this new last.fm, but frankly, it really quite confusing. Although I do like some of the new features they have inplemented, like choosing your own charts and seeing them update instantly, (not mentioning the brilliant idea of adding a shoutbox to tags - the emo tag is now officially a battlefield) I really miss the way last.fm used to look.. No more neighbours on the profile page, no more artist's tag cloud (now just one puny line of texts), no more country and places charts, no more tag chart, no rest for sore eyes after staring at all that whiteness... and with only two columns, it's really cluttered.
The artists deletion function is pretty nice, but I wish they had a search option too! It's annoying going through all the artists. AND IT TAKES AGES......
Another annoying thing is some of the simpler tasks now requires multiple clicks to complete.
Moving the shoutbox to the middle column is quite annoying, having to scroll down all the time and leaves the right column kind of empty (unless you have an extraordinarily cluttered profile page, which most people don't have)
This color scheme is really getting on my nerves...... I was just looking around the PureVolume.com forums and noted that the colors are so similar to last.fm's (What the heck, even the forum layout is similiar! Especially when images are turned off).. @_@ What now, MyLastVolumeBook.fm? *sigh* Only time will tell.
I do hope the staffs makes changes in the right direction (and I definitely don't want to see those facebookish apps on here, that would ruin the simplicity of what last.fm stands for - music), because there's so much potential in last.fm's features that are let down by the layout. More improvements are needed on this new design before it can rival the old design, because right now... I'm getting a headache navigation the site.
I like the old last.fm for being what it is, and NOT as a Facebook look-alike, or a clone of anything else. -

Hey white boy, why you bombin’ our town?
Hey white boy, you chasin’ camels around!
Pardon me sir, it’s furthest from my mind
I’m just lookin for despotic friends of mine
I’m waiting for my (oil)man.
Here he comes, he’s all dressed in white
sandals and, a towel for a hat,
He’s never early, he’s always late
First thing you learn is that you always gotta wait
I’m waiting for my (oil)man
Up to the derrick, pass Dick Cheney on the stairs,
The UN's pinned you, but nobody cares
He’s got the pump, fills your tank with eight,
Then you gotta drive 'cos you got no time to waste
I’m waiting for my (oil)man
Hey Green Boy, don’t you holler, don’t you ball and shout
I’m feeling good, drivin' my SUV about.
I’m feeling good, I'm feeling so fine
Until tomorrow, but that’s just some other time
I’m waiting for my (oil)man

Is anyone else having the same problem?
3 Mar 2008, 04:11
My Last.fm chart (and by the looks of it) everyone else's charts are all stuck on the 24 Feb. What's even worse is the fact that I had 400+ (totally lost count now) plays from over the weekend that according to the diagnosis thing in the Last.fm application was sent to the server, but none of it is showing up when I click to see my recent tracks. Recent tracks still shows up on my main profile page view, but not when I see click to see them in detail. Usually there is a bit of delay before they show up, but what the heck, it's been hours now.. What's going on? (I played Metallica's Ride the Lightning album at least 7 times over the weekend lol) I'd hate to lose out on those scrobbles because of certain mysterious mishaps.
I'm just in a pissed off mood right now. Don't mind me.
God I am so paranoid.

Feast your eyes on my top 20 artists (for connections sake):

DON't bother reading.
3 Mar 2008, 01:07
Blah. I dunno what else I can do to get into my blog writing spirits. So here goes nothing.
Warned ya not to bother. But since you're here...
1. How did you get into 29? (The Rolling Stones)
One of my favourite artists (although, to be honest, sometimes I don't like Mick Jagger's vocals) from the nostalgic era when the common people and teenagers had good taste in music. Pity to never be able to live in such times and never getting a chance to experience them live.
2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? (Arctic Monkeys)
I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor, like almost everyone else. But it was Fake Tales of San Francisco that made me decide to check them out. Very very glad I did.
3. What’s your favorite song by 14? (Pink Floyd)
Aaaa, that's a hard one! Can I just say Dark Side Of The Moon(the album)? Every song on it flows onto the next, so it is like one big long song! When I first heard it it totally blew me away. Sublime. As for individual songs, I'd have to say Speak To Me/Breathe. The other ones I like are Money and Another Brick In The Wall. Yes, I know. Very cliched.
4. What is your favorite album by 16? (Norah Jones)
Easily the first album, Come Away With Me. I haven't listened to much stuff from the later albums but I like Norah's works quite a lot.
5. How many albums by 13 do you own? (Emma Shapplin)
2, Carmine Meo & Etterna. She only had two studio albums out. I really wish Emma would record a new album some time soon, its been so long since the last one - 5/6 years now! Her music is very beautiful and poetic, and I like how she writes the lyrics in Baroque Italian!
6. What is your favorite song by 17? (Sex Pistols)
ANARCHY!!! for the UK. Don't wanna be a giant cliche by saying this but I do like that song very much. I also love the lesser known song Problems. It perfectly conveys my feelings of frustration when I feel the rage.
7. Is there a song by 7 that makes you sad? (The Beatles)
A Day In The Life. Definitely. There's a certain storytelling quality and melancholy depth to it that makes it perfect. But what the heck, it is the closing song off the best album (decleared by I don't know how many critics and fans already) ever.
8. What is your favorite album by 15? (Guns N' Roses)
(Eh, I thought they were higher on the charts... oh well.) Without a doubt Appetite For Destruction. Catchy as hell.
9. What is your favorite song by 5? (Led Zeppelin)
Fave songs questions are always so hard... so..
Stairway To Heaven would top my list of fave Led Zep songs. There's so much emotions in that song
10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? (Metallica)
Haha, I don't know about that. Most of their songs I listened to (I'm a strictly 80s Metallica only person) deals with issues and social commentaries. But listening to their cover of Queen's Stone Cold Crazy do make me feel happy :)
11. What is your favorite album by 12? (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
I would rate different albums as my faves depending on the mood I'm in. They also change based on
12. What is your favorite song by 10? (The Who)
(NOT another fave song question. Gawd, be more creative will ya??)
Talkin' bout MY GENERATION! Behind Blue Eyes..
13. What is a good memory you have involving 20? (Miyavi)
Memories??? What memories?
Connotations? Oh, lol.
It was finding out tha Miyavi & I SHARE THE SAME BIRTHDATE! I mean, what are the chances that someone famous that you know AND likes (not some random person who you don't know) are born on the same day as you?
14. What is your favorite song by 8? (AC/DC)
Shake Your Leg. "Shake it!!"
Love so many songs by them that I'm not going to list them all here.
15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? (Dir en grey)
Dir en Grey = HAPPY music? Are you kidding me?
16. How many times have you seen 25 live? (Hayley Westenra)
I'm a lame fan. I think I haven't saw her live particularly even though Hayley's from New Zealand. Gaaaa..... Last last week I had the chance to, but decided to cancel out in cos of weather. I'm a frail creature..
17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? (Caroline)
Funny, I'm just listening to her song right now (via shuffle). I think it was Where's Your Love. Lovely song.
18. What is your favorite album by 11? (Nirvana)
I am very much tempted to say Nevermind or In Utero, but curiously, I have to say Unplugged. It's something of a magic to hear Nirvana at low a decibel. And more than just incredible. The world certainly lost some sparkle since Kurt Cobain decided to leave. RIP.
19. Who is a favorite member of 1? (Queen)
Freddie Mercury, of course! But what the heck, I love them all, maybe bit more Freddie...
20. Have you ever seen 24 live? (Alice Cooper)
Na, that's what I get for 1) not being born decades earlier; 2) living in New Zealand, which is just next door to Australia and is an English speaking country but not a lot of international artists come here too often..
But Alice IS coming to Wellington with Ozzy Osbourne, Kiss, Poison, Whitesnake, Lordi for Rock2Wellington concert on 22/23 March! And damn it, I know I'm gonna miss out cos I don't live in Wellington..
21. What is a good memory involving 27? (X JAPAN)
GOSH, enough with the repetitive questions already..
I don't know how to answer this one, since I haven't been too avid a listener of J-Rock since I got hooked on Classic Rock (conflict of interests..) But I would wanna listen to more J-Rock/C-Rock/K-Rock/asian Rock from now on if anyone got some suggestions for good artists.
22. What is your favorite song by 28? (Miyavi)
Huh? Why is Miyavi on my chart twice? Man, I really hope last.fm will have some sort of chart cleaning tool or tags moderations...
Anyway, I think that song is Rock And Roll Is Not Dead and/or Senor Senora Senorite. For those of you who don't know Miyavi, check him out! He's awesome. J-Rock rocks.
23. What is the first song you ever heard by 9? (Motörhead)
Ace of Spades!
24. What is your favorite album by 18? (Ramones)
Ramones, the debut album that started it all.
25. What is your favorite song by 21? (KT Tunstall)
Under The Weather, Silent Sea, Miniature Disasters, Beauty of Uncertainty, Throw Me A Rope. One thing these all share in common: they're mostly acoustic.
26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? (2002)
River of Stars. Try them out, New age is good for you.
27. What is your favorite album by 3? (David Bowie)
Ziggy Stardust, but I love the other albums too.. so yeah.
28. What is you favorite song by 4? (OLIVIA)
THESE FAVE SONG QUESTIONS ARE SO HARD!
Celestial Delinquent, Space Halo, Africa, Wish, Walk On By. These I <3, and many more I like. Her style is so versatile that it's a shame not a lot of people know her stuff. Oh well, unless you're a fan of Japanese music that is...
29. What was the first song you ever heard by 2? (The Clash)
I first heard Rock The Casbah few years ago on the radio, but had no idea it was them. That's what you get if you live by modern top 40 charts for too long.
30. What is you favorite song by 30? (The Police)
Every Breathe You Take. And likewise, I never really knew whose song it was when I heard it (when I was like 5/6 I think.)
Yay, finally finished writing this after like 1 hour and a half. As usual, the basic concept of this was ripped off someone else's journal. Kudos for my writer's block. -

Just for memo.
24 Feb 2008, 22:11
Just for memo. Considering to leave this thing on my profile sidebar but looked a bit bloated. It's just a list of some artists I listened to, most of them before I joined Last.fm and some I only listen to on my mp3 player so were not scrobbled.
Artists not on Chart:
(Most of these I listened to a lot before Last.fm)
★ Delta Goodrem
★ Brooke Fraser
★ Green Day (Yeah. So WHAT?)
★ My Chemical Romance (Enough with the stereotyping already! They are the only "emo" band in my music collection.)
★ The Strokes
★ Muse (Ehe, didn't get scrobbled.)
★ The White Stripes (Same.)
★ The Like (Likewise.)
★ Natasha Bedingfield (Need I say more?)
★ Anna Tsuchiya (The NANA album)
★ Tomoki Hasegawa (NANA soundtracks)
★ Charlotte Church (The classical era)
★ Nelly Furtado (Her old stuff. So. Much. Better. Meaningful. Unique. Than. New.)
★ Shakira (Her Spanish stuff ONLY.)
★ Juanes (First 2 solo albums.)
★ 蔡依林 (Guilty pleasure pop music!)
★ ...And a whole bunch of random, classical, opera music.
EDIT:
I forgot the following artists... (jeez)
★ Anna Nalick (I really liked her style and her last album, hope she makes a new one soon.)
★ Jimi Hendrix (How could I have forgotten to put the God of Guitar down in my list?)
★ No Doubt (They were good, but now that Gwen's gone solo... sigh...)
★ The Killers (Mostly the first album, really liked the synth-sound, even though I'm not a fan of synths)
★ Jet (People say they ripped off old bands, but what the heck, that's exactly what we need in this music industry right now - return to basics, to the good ol' rock 'n' roll!)
★ Amy Winehouse (Liked the jazz/soul feeling when I first heard her songs. And after all she went through with the drugs and stuff I wish her well. Would be a shame for her to end up like Britney Spears did.)
★ [artist ]Fall Out Boy[/artist ] (A bit of an embarassement to admit now that I've gone on my classic rock journey. Don't listen to anymore, and probably never will again.) -
Music Guilty Pleasure [soon to be renamed and revised to something else cos it's…
8 Feb 2008, 04:24
[Ok. I officially suck at blog writing. I think for some reason I just don't know how to let go and write logically at the same time, unless it's for an English essay. Just so as long as my long term "casual" writer's block's gonna last, I guess I'll never see the day I finally writes something that doesn't drag on like this and makes perfect sense. Anyway, on the the crimes now...okay, a warning. I think throughout the whole of this entry there's gonna be a lot of contradictions, hypocritic whatevers that I just typed down cos I couldn't think properly if I let my thoughts be controlled by my hand and not by the heart so I just said them all. Will edit those out later. Meh, I'm just so lazy. And very efficient at wasting time too.]
Music Guilty Pleasures:
I may not have many pop/top40/modern commercial or music considered by most last.fmer (thank god most people here have good tastes) to be garbage scrobbled on my profile.
